‘I have a job’: Biden says he will not watch Trump impeachment trial

WASHINGTON — President Biden will not tune into former President Donald Trump’s second impeachment trial because he is too busy, he told reporters on Tuesday as proceedings got underway.

“I am not,” Biden said in the Oval Office when asked if he would watch the trial. “I told you before, I have a job.”

The Biden administration has tried to distance itself from the partisan proceedings, instead focusing on its legislative agenda, which includes a $1.9 trillion coronavirus rescue package.

“We’ve already lost over 450,000 people and we’re going to lose a whole lot more if we don’t act and act decisively and quickly,” Biden said during a meeting with the nation’s top CEOs.

“A lot of children are going to bed hungry. A lot of families are food-insecure. They are in trouble. That’s my job,” he added.

The president, who spent 36 years in Congress as a senator from Delaware, said he trusted his colleagues on Capitol Hill to handle the matter.

“The Senate has their job and they are about to begin it and I am sure they are going to conduct themselves well. That’s all I am going to have to say about impeachment,” Biden said.

Earlier Tuesday, White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki said the president would not “opine” on whether it was constitutional for Congress to impeach Trump since he has left office.

The former commander-in-chief was impeached by the House last month on the single charge that he incited the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.

Trump’s attorneys argue that he never issued a call to arms during his fiery speech to supporters ahead of the siege and said the FBI knew for days of a threat against the Capitol.
