Patrick Mahomes will have toe surgery after Super Bowl 2021 letdown

Patrick Mahomes is facing surgery following one of the worst statistical performances of his career in Sunday’s loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Super Bowl 2021.

The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback is slated for surgery Wednesday to repair a torn plantar plate in his toe – commonly known as turf toe – according to NFL Network.

The injury hampered the former MVP late in the season, but he successfully played through it in the Chiefs’ AFC Championship victory against Buffalo.

Mahomes was held without a touchdown pass in Sunday’s 31-9 loss to the Bucs, completing 26 of 49 pass attempts for 270 yards with two interceptions. He is likely to miss most of the Chiefs’ offseason program, but is expected to be ready by training camp, ESPN reported.

“I can’t say the toe was a problem when I played two weeks ago and I played well on it,” Mahomes said after Sunday’s game. “Anytime you play football, you have to battle through injuries.”

Mahomes was under constant pressure against Tampa Bay’s defense, running 497 “scramble yards” before releasing the ball or being sacked, according to Next Gen Stats, the most since the service began charting that statistic in 2016.
