Jason Garrett could be on his way back to the coaching ranks, but not in the NFL.
The former Cowboys head coach and ex-Giants offensive coordinator is a finalist for the Stanford head coaching job, per multiple reports on Thursday. Sacramento State coach Troy Taylor is also in the running.
Garrett, 56, has worked for NBC as an analyst on Notre Dame games and a studio analyst for “Sunday Night Football” this year. He joined the Giants, for whom he was a backup quarterback from 2000-03, as their offensive coordinator in 2020 after 10 seasons as the Cowboys head coach. He was fired in November 2021 after the Giants started 3-7.
Garrett was in the running to become Duke’s new head coach last year before the school hired Mike Elko.
In 2020, the Giants had the second-fewest yards per game (299.6) and points per game (17.5) in the NFL, only ahead of the Jets in both categories. They were 31st in both categories last season too, averaging 287.3 yards and 15.2 points per game.
David Shaw stepped down as Stanford’s head coach after the team went 3-9 during the 2022 season. He was the Cardinal head coach for 12 seasons, during which he won three conference titles.
According to ESPN, it’s expected Stanford will decide on a new head coach “in the upcoming days.”
