Jalen Carter underwhelms at Georgia pro day after car-crash arrest

Top defensive tackle prospect Jalen Carter had a rough outing at Georgia’s pro day in Athens on Wednesday.

Carter — who was charged with reckless driving on March 1 stemming from the Jan. 15 car crash that killed his teammate and a recruiting staff member — showed up to Georgia’s pro day nine pounds heavier than he was at the NFL Combine last week, according to ESPN.

The 6-foot-3 junior, Carter reportedly weighed 323 pounds at the pro day — and was seen breathing heavily before unable to finish his position drills due to cramping.

At one point, Carter was photographed sprawled out on the floor at Georgia’s indoor facility while working with a trainer.

The 21-year-old appeared exhausted in front of all 32 NFL teams in attendance, including three head coaches: the Falcons’ Arthur Smith, Bears’ Matt Eberflus and Steelers’ Mike Tomlin.

Carter only participated in position drills and opted not to take part in any other portion of the pro day workout — including the 40-yard dash, cone drills and other physical tests, according to the outlet.

He did not speak speak to reporters on Wednesday.

Former NFL tight end Clay Harbor reposted a video of Carter on Twitter, and said the Georgia product looked “gassed” while doing drills.

“You had one job and that’s to be in shape for your pro day,” Harbor wrote.

“If you can’t do that the NFL will be hard for you. You can’t physically dominate everyone. Not a good look.”

Carter’s underwhelming pro day came after he didn’t to work out in front of scouts at the NFL combine in Indianapolis on March 2.

He also did not participate in his media session.

However, Carter was measured and had interviews with NFL teams.

Carter left the combine early on March 1 to return to Athens, where he was arrested on misdemeanor charges of racing and reckless driving for his alleged role in the car wreck that killed Georgia offensive lineman Devin Willock and recruiting staffer Chandler LeCroy.

The fatal crash took place hours after the Bulldogs held their championship parade.

Police allege that Carter was racing his 2021 Jeep Trackhawk against LeCroy when the SUV she was driving hit two power poles and several trees.

Police said LeCroy’s SUV was going 104 mph before the crash and that she had a blood alcohol level of .197 — more than twice the legal limit.

Athens-Clarke County jail records indicate the reckless driving charge carried a $1,500 bond while the racing charge carried $2,500.

Carter posted bond and was released from Athens-Clarke County Jail just 16 minutes after booking.

He then returned to the combine in Indianapolis.

In a statement, Carter said in part, “… There is no question in my mind that when all of the facts are known that I will be fully exonerated of criminal wrongdoing.”

Carter will be required to appear in Athens-Clarke Municipal Court on April 18, his attorney, Kim Stephens, told ESPN on Tuesday.

The 2023 NFL Draft begins on April 27.

Carter appeared in 11 games for the Bulldogs in 2022.
