Former Patriots star Jason McCourty made no friends on Day 2 of the 2023 NFL Draft.
“I have some fond memories here,” ex-cornerback told the crowd before announcing the Titans’ third-round pick. “I remember being at Arrowhead Stadium in 2018 when [the Patriots] won the AFC Title, and we went to the Super Bowl, and Patrick Mahomes is one trophy short.”
His two-minute-long tirade was just getting started.
“But now it’s all about the Tennessee Titans. We are the real team where the Houston Oilers started. Tennessee, the home of the best barbeque in the nation,” McCourty screamed as the fans erupted. “I’m sorry I don’t mean to offend anybody, but for the Titans, the division is ours.
“I don’t care what the Texans did yesterday; they are gonna go get their letterman jackets again.”
He then pulled in fellow former NFL punter-turned-media personality Pat McAfee, who famously roasted the Titans in Nashville while announcing a pick at the 2019 NFL Draft:
“Hello, Nashville,” McAfee said. “I’m not going to say a single word about the Titans’ record against the Colts because I was a punter, and there’s no reason for me to talk about that. With that said, we did not punt much against the Titans, so you probably have no clue who I am, to begin with.”
McCourty finally had his chance to throw it back at McAfee.
“The Indianapolis Colts are 2-6 against the Titans since Pat McAfee came up here and did his wrestling announcement,” he said, before turning his diatribe to another AFC South combatant. “And the Jacksonville Jaguars haven’t had back-to-back winning seasons since I was a senior in high school.”
He concluded — eventually — by announcing the draft pick of Tyjae Spears, a running back for Tulane.
McCourty walked off the stage with a mix of boos and cheers to the third-round draft choice.
