The Yankees are planning as if it is “bulls–t.”
After Carlos Rodon’s wife, Ashley, emphatically questioned a report about the pitcher missing the entire season, the Yankees laid out their immediate plans for him.
Rodon received a cortisone injection on Tuesday to help with the discomfort in his back that has slowed his recovery from a left forearm strain, which has kept him out for the start of the season.
“We’ll see now,’’ Yankees manager Aaron Boone told reporters on Tuesday.
“There’s 48 hours of not doing much at all, then hopefully on Friday he’ll start exercising and then throwing by the weekend.”
It has been a frustrating start to the 30-year-old’s Yankees career after signing a six-year, $162 million contract this offseason.
The story that Ashley questioned came from Jomboy’s James O’Brien.
“Don’t get your hopes up for Rodon pitching this season,” said O’Brien, who co-hosts the “Talkin’ Yanks” podcast, which includes weekly spots from Boone.
“If we were to pass along things that have been passed along to us that are unverified, unsourced whatever… Some people are just like ‘eh, I don’t think it’s going to happen.’”
Those comments were distilled into a tweet that said, “Jomboy said on Talkin’ Yanks that he’s heard from unverified sources within the Yankees building not to get your hopes up on Rodon pitching this year.”
That is the message that caught Ashley’s eye and led to her “bulls–t” response.
Skepticism though will likely remain until Rondon toes the rubber for the Yankees as thus far his comeback has been delayed by frustrating setbacks.
“We want to get him right and get the Carlos Rodon we know we’re going to get,” Boone said last week. “We’re confident we’ll get there. … More than anything, he’s frustrated. He wants to be here. He wants to be on the mound.”
Rodon, who was one of the top pitchers in free agency this offseason, went 14-8 with a 2.88 ERA for the Giants last season.
