Cuomo says Biden, Dems have no border ‘policy or plan’ as rumors swirl he’s eying run for NYC mayor
Disgraced former Gov. Andrew Cuomo blasted his own party over the lack of a border policy Thursday, criticizing the party’s “ineffectiveness” and “ideological divides” amid rumors he’s considering a run for New York City mayor.
Cuomo urged Democrats to unite on the migrant issue, writing in an op-in published in The Hill that the party has no “policy or plan” to combat the chaos wreaking havoc on the Big Apple.
“What is our border policy, and how did we expect to handle the 2 million immigrants and asylum-seekers who came over the border, and are continuing to come over?” Cuomo wrote.
“Right now there is no Democratic policy or plan and Americans know it, highlighting Democrats’ governmental ineffectiveness and the idealogical divides in our party,” he continued.
The ex-governor criticized President Joe Biden for lack of solutions to the crisis, which he blamed in part on Republican governors shuttling busloads of migrants to Democrat-run cities.
Democratic leaders, including those in New York and New Jersey, can’t even come to an agreement with each other on how to fix the problem, Cuomo argued and said the Garden State has rejected Biden’s proposed sites for migrant facilities and directed any busses entering back to New York.
The difference in opinion on how to handle the crisis only expands within New York State — even though the majority of migrants are being sheltered in the Big Apple with money from the pockets of city taxpayers, Cuomo argued.
“Democratic legislators and executives in other parts of the state, fearing political opposition, have been unwelcoming. New York’s governor also fears the political fallout and has chiefly focused on containing the migrants to New York City,” Cuomo wrote.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams “stands virtually alone in accepting the migrants,” which has not only damaged his reputation but taken a massive toll on the five boroughs, he continued.
Cuomo argued New York City residents “believe migrants should be housed throughout the state, not just in their city, and that the state and federal government should pay more of the cost,” and even pro-migrant Democrats are “displeased” by the situation.
“This is not New York liberals taking a different position than southern Blue Dog Democrats. It’s New York taking a different position than New Jersey, upstate Democrats taking a different position than downstate Democrats, and the Democratic governor taking a different position than the Democratic mayor,” he wrote.
The ousted state leader argued the lack of a cohesive plan among Democrats is “obvious to all.”
“The president, governor and mayor are all blamed by the public for the obvious failure. It must be resolved,” he wrote, noting that in order to get people to “believe in the Democratic agenda,” there first must be a defined Democratic agenda.
Cuomo said Democrats needed to stand for more than just being an alternative to another Trump presidency if they wanted to win elections.
“We cannot wager that citizens will vote against Trump, but rather give them a reason to vote for Democrats,” he wrote. “We must make the positive case for a Democratic future — the negative case against Trump makes itself.”
Cuomo’s op-ed comes as the former governor is rumored to be eyeing a run for mayor, as Mayor Adams’ 2021 campaign is currently the subject of a federal probe.
The ex-governor, who was booted from office in 2021 following scathing sexual harassment allegations, declined to give a straight answer on the subject during a VIP celebration for Fresco by Scotto’s 30th anniversary Monday night, Page Six reported.
Cuomo has repeatedly denied all sexual assault and harassment allegations.
