Florida man steals good Samaritan’s car moments before dying in head-on collision with tractor-trailer
A Florida man stole the car of a good Samaritan who pulled over to check on him after he wrecked his car — only to die in a crash moments later.
A 35-year-old woman was driving along State Road 50 in Brooksville — about 70 miles west of Orlando — when she spotted a GMC Sierra that had crashed into the traffic median at around 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, The News & Observer reported, citing Florida Highway Patrol.
After she pulled over to investigate the wreck, the Sierra’s driver, a 29-year-old man from Dade City, “arrived on foot” and stole her car, a Chevy HHR, leaving her stranded on the dark highway, according to the state agency.
The Dade City man took off in the Chevy westbound on State Road 50 and lost control just three miles later.
He crossed the center median into oncoming traffic and collided “head-on” with a tractor-trailer, highway patrol said.
He was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the collision and “suffered fatal injuries,” authorities said.
The tractor-trailer driver, a 45-year-old Plant City man, sustained minor injuries.
The identity of the carjacker has not been released.
