Jesse Marsch has ‘no interest’ in USMNT job — and doesn’t think he ever will

Jesse Marsch quickly closed the door.

Not now, and probably not ever.

The American-born manager is currently in charge of the Canada national team, and the United States men’s national team currently has a head-coaching vacancy after firing Gregg Berhalter earlier this week.

“I’m not leaving this job,” Marsch said Friday. “I have no interest in the U.S. job.”

Marsch and Canada face Uruguay in the 2024 Copa America third-place game at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, N.C. on Saturday after losing to Argentina in the semifinals Tuesday night at MetLife Stadium.

Given his experience managing in America with MLS’ Red Bulls, and his stature having managed at the top levels in England with Leeds, Germany with Red Bull Leipzig and Austria with Red Bull Salzburg, Marsch’s name has long been linked with the USMNT team job.

Marsch, 50, interviewed for the USMNT’s vacant head-coaching job in December 2022 after Berhalter’s contract expired, but the United States Soccer Federation opted to bring Berhalter back on a new deal.

This past May, Marsch, a Racine, Wis. native, blasted the USMNT and USSF for his experience interviewing for the position, saying, “I wasn’t treated very well.”

He’s since found immediate success, guiding Canada to the Copa America semifinals in their first campaign in the tournament.

Berhalter, meanwhile, failed to make it out of the group stage with the USMNT, becoming the first host nation to be eliminated in the group stage in tournament history.

He was subsequently fired on Wednesday.

“And to be fair, unless there’s a big shift in the organization, I don’t think that I’ll ever have any interest in that job in the future,” Marsch said. “So I’m really happy here, I couldn’t be happier actually in terms of what it’s like to work with the leaders in this organization and what it’s like to work with this team.”

Prior to Canada’s semifinal loss, Marsch raved about working with the team.

“I’m at a point in my life where I don’t need all the other bulls–t,” Marsch said on Monday. “I want to do things I want to do. I want to get back to loving the game that I love, and this team has helped me find that, and I’m very thankful for that.”
