Wrong-way crash driver flees fatal NYC highway wreck that killed two men
Two men were killed and one person was arrested after a fiery two-car crash in Harlem in which a pickup truck was driving the wrong way on the highway, police said.
The driver of the pickup truck fled and was still on the loose, while his passenger was nabbed about 30 feet from the scene, cops said.
The fiery, multi-vehicle crash happened on the northbound Henry Hudson near West 154th Street around 2:20 a.m., according to police.
The 40-year-old man behind the wheel of the black Dodge sedan that was struck was taken to Harlem Hospital, and later pronounced dead, authorities said.
His passenger, a 33-year-old man, was rushed to Columbia Presbyterian where he was also later pronounced dead.
The driver and the passenger of the pickup both ran off after the crash, cops said.
“The passenger was apprehended about 30 feet away from the pickup truck,” an NYPD spokesman said.
The passenger, who has not been publicly identified, was taken to Harlem Hospital with an ankle injury, according to police.
The victims have not yet been publicly identified, pending family notification.
The front half of the Dodge was completely crushed in the collision, according to photos of the damages.
Blood could be seen staining the airbag on the driver’s side of the Dodge, video taken by FNTV of the aftermath showed.
The pickup truck burst into flames which had to be extinguished by firefighters, according to authorities and video taken by Loudlabs.
The black and red racing-striped Dodge sedan had New Jersey plates, while the pickup truck appeared to have license plates from Ontario, Canada, according to the footage.
A long line of cars could be seen backed up on the parkway after the incident.
A black Audi was also apparently swept up in the crash but it was unclear exactly what happened to damage that vehicle’s front end.
The Audi driver was treated at the scene for minor injuries.
Video showed another SUV also appeared to be damage from the collision, but police said no other injuries were reported.
No arrests have been made yet in the ongoing investigation, NYPD said.
