Week 9 Heisman odds, predictions: Cade Klubnik will challenge Cam Ward

Coming down the stretch of the college football season, we’re starting to get a clearer picture of how the Heisman Trophy race could shake out.

There were a handful of big-time ranked matchups with impactful results and massive performances over the weekend, but we’re left with a Heisman odds board that greatly resembles the one we had last week.

I’m using the current odds on FanDuel for this article, but be sure to shop around before placing a wager to ensure you get the best available number.

Let’s dive into the updated odds for the Heisman Trophy and offer a value pick for Week 9.

2024 Heisman Trophy: Week 9 leaders

Miami QB Cam Ward (+200)

Ward led Miami to a frenetic 52-45 win over Louisville on Saturday, maintaining the Hurricanes’ perfect record on the season. He was nearly perfect himself, completing 21-of-32 passes for 319 yards and four touchdowns.

The Canes seem to flirt with disaster almost every week, and they likely won’t be able to keep it going throughout the entire season, but Ward leads the FBS with 2,538 passing yards and 24 touchdowns.

Up next: Miami is favored by 21.5 points at home over Florida State on Saturday.

Boise State RB Ashton Jeanty (+200)

The Broncos are coming off a well-timed bye week before their biggest game of the season on the road against UNLV.

Jeanty has been extraordinary this season, leading the FBS with 1,248 rushing yards and 17 touchdowns despite already having his bye week. Even if he can maintain his historic pace, winning the Heisman as a running back from a Group of Five team would be an uphill battle.

The odds on Jeanty to win the Heisman aren’t particularly enticing right now, and I’d sooner recommend a wager on Boise State to beat UNLV on Friday night. If the Broncos can pull off that win, their path looks clear to win out and earn the G5 auto-bid in the College Football Playoff.

Up next: Boise State is a 2.5-point road favorite over UNLV on Friday night.

Oregon QB Dillon Gabriel (+350)

Oregon was primarily out of the public eye last week, dismantling a hapless 1-6 Purdue team 35-0 on Friday night. Gabriel completed 21-of-25 passes for 290 yards and two touchdowns in the game.

His odds skyrocketed after the Ducks’ big home win over Ohio State in Week 7, and Oregon is now ranked No. 1 in the AP Top 25.

Still, Gabriel is a tier below Ward and Jeanty in pricing, as his numbers aren’t as prolific. He’ll have a chance to put up big numbers the rest of the season against a schedule that should see the Ducks as big favorites in every game until the Big Ten Championship.

Up next: Oregon is a 21.5-point home favorite over Illinois on Saturday.

It's been a frustrating, injury-plagued season for Colorado's Travis Hunter.

Colorado WR/DB Travis Hunter (+1500)

After suffering a shoulder injury against Kansas State, Hunter played against Arizona over the weekend, but he reaggravated the injury and was forced to leave the game. He caught two passes for 17 yards and added a tackle at cornerback against Arizona before exiting.

His early season workload was a red flag for injury, and he likely needed to sustain that pace to compete for the Heisman this year.

I can’t recommend betting on an injury-plagued Hunter playing on a Colorado team that is fighting an uphill battle to make the CFP.

Up next: Colorado is a 4.5-point home favorite over Cincinnati on Saturday.

2024 Heisman Trophy: Week 9 value pick

Clemson QB Cade Klubnik (+2000)

It seems sportsbooks don’t know what to do with the Clemson quarterback as his odds range from +2000 at several books to as low as +1000 at Caesars. This is why it’s important to shop around before placing a wager.

Coming off another impressive showing, Klubnik completed 23-of-35 passes for 308 yards and three touchdowns. He now ranks second in the FBS with 20 passing TDs.

The further removed we are from the Week 1 beatdown by Georgia — Clemson’s lone defeat on the season — the more Klubnik looks like a real threat in this market.

Betting on College Football?

Following the Tigers’ bye week, they have a manageable schedule where they’ll be favored over every opponent. Assuming Klubnik leads the team to an 11-1 record, the Tigers would have an opportunity to defeat Ward’s Hurricanes in the ACC Championship, making for a fascinating fallout in the Heisman race.

Up next: Clemson is on bye in Week 9.
