Time is now for dynamic Garrett Wilson-Davante Adams duo to take Jets to new heights

GLENDALE, Ariz. — Aaron Rodgers will be greeted with sunshine and temperatures in the upper 70s on Sunday, ideal conditions for him to sling the football around at State Farm Stadium to Garrett Wilson and Davante Adams when the Jets attempt their desperate run to end their ghastly 13-year playoff drought.

The signs were there for all to see last Thursday at MetLife Stadium, when Wilson did his Odell Beckham Jr. thing and Adams reprised his magical old Green Bay connection with Rodgers in the second half against the Texans.

It took Adams until his third game back together with Rodgers to remind the football world of the kind of telepathy they have and impact he can still make, and offer evidence for the first time what a dynamic duo he and Wilson can be with a win-now season on the line each week.

Breece Hall considers Adams and Wilson the best WR duo in the league.

“Because they’re both No. 1 receivers,” Hall told The Post. “It helps the offense so much ’cause defenses have to account for them so much and it opens up the run game, and it’s kind of a pick-your-poison, whether you want us to sit there and run the ball or whether you want us to pass the ball. That’s what makes them the best, because they require so much attention.”

Sauce Gardner was asked if he considers Adams and Wilson the best WR duo.

“I think so,” he said. “They just got to put it on tape even more,” he said, “have more games with each other.”

Wilson won’t be making one-handed touchdown catches all the time, but he has earned Rodgers’ trust to throw him open, especially now that the presence of Adams has liberated him from suffocating double coverage.

“The show they just put on last week on a short week, very impressive,” safety Jalen Mills told The Post. “Their bond, their connection with A-Rod and knowing where he’s going to throw the ball in certain coverages and who he’s going to go to is just going to continue to grow.”

Pick your poison.

“You got one guy who’s been in the league 10-plus years, you got a young guy who’s been dynamic since he got in the league,” Mills said. “They’re both similar and different in their own ways. Similarities I think is the slashing ability, and then I think where they’re different is both of ’em can get YAC, but the way that they get YAC once they get the ball in their hand is very unique between those two guys.

“Garrett is more like basketball. … Garrett’s going to have a guy in space, he might do two, three spins, and he’s going to give you that ’wow.’ ’Tae’s going to get straight to it, but they’re both good with the ball in their hands.”

I asked D.J.Reed: If you were building the perfect wide receiver, what would you take from Davante Adams?

“His release package off the line of scrimmage. … I think that’s very elite,” Reed said. “He’s really quick. I think it startles a lot of quarterbacks. Because he’s a bigger receiver. And then also, his jump ball ability. If you watch his dunking videos, he has crazy bounce. So overall he’s a dynamic receiver.”

What would Reed take from Garrett Wilson?

“Garrett just moves different, his body movement is unorthodox. Same thing, really … quick and agile, but he just does things that most guys can’t do,” Reed said.

I asked Wilson: If you could build the perfect wide receiver, what would you take from Davante Adams and Garrett Wilson?

“I would take the separation skills from ’Tae,” Wilson said. “Really just carbon copy ’Tae and send his ass out there, for real. He’s got the size, he’s got the measurables. Maybe my speed, that’s the one thing I’d take from me. I’m trying to learn every day to get to that point that ’Tae’s at, man.”

Adams’ career with Rodgers: 629 catches, 7,704 yards, 69 TDs.

Adams’ 2024 season with Rodgers: 14-175-1.

Wilson’s career with Rodgers: 60-673-5.

Wilson’s three games with Adams: 19-264-2.

Is there a better WR duo?

“I’m obviously biased, but no, there’s not,” Solomon Thomas told The Post. “I don’t see a better duo.”

The Rams certainly can make an argument with Cooper Kupp and Puka Nacua. So can the Dolphins (Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle), Eagles (A.J. Brown and DaVonta Smith), Bengals (Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins) and Texans (Nico Collins and Stefon Diggs) not far behind.

Asked if he and Adams were the best duo in the league, Wilson said, “I don’t know, we got to go prove it every week. I don’t really buy into all that stuff, we want to be the best team we can be. So whatever they ask out of us to be the best team, that’s what we’re going to do.”

Air Rodgers: Sky’s the limit. Time is now.
