Everyone always wishes they had more sleep – but getting a good night’s rest can sometimes feel stressful and difficult. That’s especially true if you don’t have the strongest sleep essentials, like a good pillow that complements your sleep position.
If you’re having trouble remembering the last time you purchased a new pillow, chances are it’s time for an upgrade. We put several best-rated pillows to the test with our New York Post employees (and one partner) to find out which pillows can help you get better sleep. They slept on the test pillows for an entire year, and here’s the verdict 12 months later.
Drumroll, please …

Here’s what our testers had to say from their year-long test:
Stephanie K., combination sleeper (side and back)
Favorite pillow: Saybrook Adjustable Pillow
As a side sleeper, the adjustable firmness of the pillow helps my neck and back feel supported. When I first received it, I removed some filling to fit my sleeping preference. Due to this, I haven’t had to readjust the pillow at all during the time that I’ve had it. My sleep quality has improved so much. I’m no longer tossing and turning. Once my head hits the pillow, I am out for the night.
How has your sleep gotten better since making the switch? Good sleep has been a bit tough to come by with an energetic 1-year-old. The Saybrook Pillow has become my go-to every night for a peaceful night’s sleep. I feel more rested and comfortable throughout the night.
Nicholas S., back sleeper
Favorite pillow: Chamberlain Down Dual-Chamber Pillow
Overall, the Chamberlain Pillow has been an excellent addition to my bedroom. The Chamberlain Pillow really just fit the perfect sweet spot for me in firmness and my sleep quality has definitely improved. I have always been a bit of a restless sleeper, waking up often, and fighting to go back to bed. I find myself wrestling less often with my pillow to adjust it to the right comfort level, moving around the stuffing to make it fit just right. My level of comfort has even improved when I am lying in bed reading a book. The Chamberlain had a much more quality feel to it than other pillows I have used in the past.
Would you recommend this pillow to your friends or family? Absolutely. I have sent the recommendation to a few family members that share my same sleep preference for pillow firmness.
Jackie J., combination sleeper (side and back)
Favorite pillow: Chamberlain Down Dual-Chamber Pillow
I usually avoid down pillows because they tend to be floppy and flatten out very easily. But when I tried the Chamberlain Down pillow, I felt like I was staying at a high-end hotel. My head stayed elevated and level with my shoulders, which helped alleviate my back pain. The other down pillows are so thin, and I found myself tossing and turning and constantly trying to re-fluff it, but my Chamberlain pillow stayed fluffy and cozy the entire night.
How has your sleep gotten better since making the switch? I find that, because my neck is comfortable, I’m moving way less.
Paul P., combination sleeper (side and stomach)
Favorite pillow: Chamberlain Down Dual-Chamber Pillow
It truly feels like I have a luxury hotel pillow at home. It is soft, cushiony and makes it feel like I am sleeping on a cloud. As a new dad, getting a good night’s rest has been difficult. The Chamberlain Down Pillow has greatly improved the quality of my sleep. I finally feel rested when I wake up. It feels like this pillow was meant for a side and stomach sleeper like myself. I’m happy that I was able to make the switch and have seen such an improvement in my physical and mental health.
Would you recommend this pillow to your friends or family? The best gift you can give someone is a good night’s rest. I would absolutely recommend the Chamberlain Down to my family and friends.
Kristen Y., combination sleeper (side, stomach and back)
Favorite pillow: Saybrook Adjustable Pillow
Before trying Saybrook, I had only ever used down-alternative pillows that didn’t provide any support to my neck. It was firm and supportive on my neck. Using the Saybrook Pillow takes the pressure off my neck and shoulders, leading to a more relaxing sleep. After using Saybook, I will never go back to a non-memory foam pillow.
Has your sleep gotten better? Yes, I wake up feeling less stiff in my neck.
Jain K., side sleeper
Favorite pillow: Chamberlain Down Dual-Chamber Pillow
I love the Chamberlain Pillow! I sleep on it every night! I love how incredibly soft and comfortable it is. The Chamberlain and its luxury materials have greatly improved my quality of life. Compared to other down pillows I’ve tried, the Chamberlain pillow has better quality filling, and fully supports my head and neck while sleeping. I no longer wake up with neck pain or exhausted from a bad night’s sleep. I sleep great and wake up feeling refreshed. It has drastically improved my sleep at night!
Would you recommend this pillow to your friends or family? I would highly recommend this pillow to anyone looking to finally get a good night’s sleep! My husband tries to steal it every night.
Gregg M., side sleeper
Favorite pillow: Saybrook Adjustable Pillow
As a side sleeper, it has always been challenging finding a pillow that is firm enough to offer neck support, but still really comfortable. My search was over when I found the Saybrook Pillow. Most other adjustable memory foam pillows that I’ve tried lose shape and support over the course of the night, but the Saybrook maintains form really well.
Would you recommend this pillow to your friends or family? Yes, I highly recommend it because I sleep like a baby each night!
Stinson F., combination sleeper (side, stomach and back)
Favorite pillow: Saybrook Adjustable Pillow
I’m not waking up in the middle of the night to readjust my pillow. When I wake up in the morning, I am well rested and my neck and shoulders aren’t sore. Compared to the other pillows I’ve tried, especially memory foam pillows, the Saybrook offers a height that is comfortable at all positions – and doesn’t sink throughout the night.
How has this pillow improved your sleep quality?
It has improved my sleep quality mainly by improving my sleep position. It feels like my head is held in position naturally, not sinking and constantly readjusting.
