WHILE incoming Sunday News editor Ed Kosner seems in no hurry to occupy his new office – if you don’t actually start work, you tend to have a longer shelf life with publisher Mort Zuckerman – the paper’s dwindling readers must be crying out for relief.
Yesterday, the News made much of a story headlined ”Joltin’ News About Joe D.,” in which it was said DiMaggio remains in grave condition, bedridden, under 24-hour nursing care and on and off a ventilator. The only reason he was sent home ”was because there was nothing more the hospital’s staff could do for him,” the account stated.
News? On Jan. 18, I wrote that Joe was being discharged because ”there’s not much more the hospital can do for him” and that he would need ”constant care.” The next day, we ran a story stating that it was a pipe dream to believe Joe would get to the Yankees’ opening game and that, basically, he’d been sent home to die.
No one wants to score points off this sad story and everyone should be praying for the old Yankee Clipper to have his last at bat as peacefully and painlessly as possible.
So please, if you haven’t got anything NEW to report, just shut up and let this very private hero alone.
