Stars including Robert De Niro were for once applauding in their seats while their wives and socialites danced onstage at the opening of the Martha Graham Dance Company’s 85th season. Guests at the Rose Theater Tuesday night included Woody Allen, Mikhail Baryshnikov, Jessica Lange, Rufus Wainwright, Robert Wilson, Mary McFadden, Glenn O’Brien, Jay McInerney and Ann Hearst. They watched as Muffie Potter Aston, Grace Hightower, Cornelia Guest, Somers Farkas and Karen LeFrak performed cameo roles in Graham’s last great work, “Maple Leaf Rag.” Ballet legend Baryshnikov was heard telling Potter Aston‘s 6-year-old twin daughters as they cheered their mother, “You’ll be beautiful dancers onstage like that someday.” Later at dinner, the husbands gathered to gether with their wives in triumph. De Niro even joked with photographers that “my wife’s the star.” The Graham company’s run continues through Sunday.
