Gigi Hadid had ‘rat problem’ in NYC apartment, ‘looking forward’ to renovating to prevent rodents

Gigi Hadid is dealing with a quintessential New York “problem.”

The 29-year-old supermodel revealed in a recent Architectural Digest interview that she had to renovate part of her apartment due to rodents.

“My outdoor space in New York is getting a little update because we had a rat problem in New York, and some of the original designs of the space didn’t help that problem,” she told the outlet when asked what she would “change” about her space.

“So that’s what I’m looking forward to,” she added.

New York City’s fight against rats has ramped up in recent years, with Mayor Eric Adams even appointing an official “rat czar” in 2023.

In September, City Council also approved a bill to lace rat traps with rodent birth control to halt the growing rodent population — meaning Hadid is far from the only one dealing with this issue.

While it is unclear whether the rats infiltrated her living space as well, the catwalker thankfully has another home in Pennsylvania where she could flee.

She described her interior design style as “eclectic, industrial farmhouse” in the interview but noted that it has shifted over the years.

“The way I designed and decorated my homes or apartments at first and the evolution of my fashion style are similar,” she explained. “When I first moved to New York, my style was very on trend all the time and the way I decorated my apartments was safe and quite simple.”

Although Hadid wanted “to express [herself]” through design, she “didn’t have the experience or means to be more creative.”

“Once I got to a place where I could buy my first apartment and have more of a creative hand print on it, that was also the time in my [fashion] style where I was just like, ‘F it; I get to wake up every day and express myself and it’s not for the opinions of others,’” she continued. “And I think that I’ve gotten there in expressing myself in my living spaces.”

Over the years, Hadid noticed one specific color she kept gravitating toward.

“For me, it’s always yellow,” she shared. “Sunflower yellow is my happy color. So you can see me in yellow all the time, in any season.”

The model incorporated the bright hue into several rooms in her home, as seen in photos previously shared on Instagram.

Hadid seemingly added a pop of citrus into nearly every room in her house, including her kitchen, which she said was one of her “favorite” rooms.

Hadid quietly dropped $5.8 million on her Noho townhouse in December 2018, located in the same building as her two-bedroom, two-and-a-half-bathroom apartment, purchased for $3.97 million three years prior.

She reportedly renovated and combined the two units.

The townhouse included a 770-square-foot landscaped private terrace, which is soon-to-be rat-free.
