One of the numbers on the program is an equestrian act, listed as "Madame Yvette." With a tight grip, Zenus' wife grasps his arm and exclaims, "Our little Vinny." The two set out to interview the girl. The girl's life among the show people has been a hard one. Her act is mediocre, and she has been held with the show for the simple reason there was no one better to take her place. Merry Andrews, the head clown, has done much to make her lot a little happier, and there was warm friendship between the two. Zenus and his wife, meanwhile, have sought out the manager of the show and explained to him that their child had been lost during a flood ten years before, and that the girl equestrian is the living image of their daughter. A shrewd scheme occurs to the manager, and after hesitating a bit he agrees to let the old folks meet the girl. Hastily calling his publicity man aside, the manager explains how they can let the girl go with the old folks as their long-lost child and later let her leave the old folks a note telling them that the lure of the show was too much for her. The publicity man agrees that it will be a great scheme, and will be profitable advertising for the girl's act. While the manager is showing the old folks about, the publicity man broaches the subject to the girl. At first she refuses to have anything to do with the scheme, claiming that it will be too great a disappointment to the old people, but when she is threatened with being discharged, she is forced to agree to the deception. The meeting is a pathetic one. The girl fits into the home atmosphere, and proves to be a great comfort to the old people. Jonathan Parker, a neighboring farmer, learns of her arrival and comes over to welcome her to the community. A strong love grows up between the two latter. Lavinia, as she is now called, receives a note from the manager, telling her to return to the show, but she keeps it a secret from the old folks. Merry Andrews calls on the girl at the house, and asks her when she is going to return to the show. She informs him that she does not intend to leave the old folks. Merry Andrews then tells her that the manager is sore, and intends to tell the old folks of the girl's deception unless she returns immediately. Jonathan Parker overhears part of their conversation and upbraids the girl for being out with the "city fellow," as he thinks Andrews is. The two have a big scene, in which the girl acknowledges her deception, and claims that she did it for the happiness of the old people. She then tells who she really is, and is very much surprised when Jonathan makes her an offer of marriage and pleads with her to stay on the old place. Mrs. Corwin comes in and hears this conversation, and the girl again confesses her deception. The old lady then tells the girl that she has known for a long time that she was not her real daughter, but for the sake of her husband she had assisted in carrying out the deception. The old lady pleads with the girl to remain with them as their daughter, for Zenus need never know the difference. Jonathan adds his persuasion, too, and the girl finally consents. The story ends happily when Jonathan tells the old folks that they can have Lavinia only for a short time, but as his house is close by. It will only result in her having two homes instead of one.
