Judith feels guilty as Edward had recently proposed at last, so volunteers as nurse and messenger for alcoholic aunt Biddy, and falls in love with country doctor Jeremy Wells, whom she barely noticed when his buddy Edward was around, but separate again for years after a passionate night. Her kid sister Jess, who was presumed killed in the war like their parents, suddenly turns up, but mute after the POW camp trauma.
