The "Terra X" three-part series "The Arctic - 66.5 degrees North" paints a portrait of the polar regions that makes you wonder, hope and despair. The films document the uniqueness of the Arctic world: its magic, its wealth and the international hunt for mineral resources. And help to understand their end due to the great melting and complex global effects of the Arctic climate. Polar bear Misha hikes hundreds of kilometers through snow and ice on Spitsbergen with her daughter Flocke. The hunt for prey is becoming increasingly difficult on the shrinking ice. Misha has been equipped by researchers with GPS trackers that help document the polar bear's long journey in search of food. There are only major cities with Murmansk and Norilsk in Russia. In total, only two million people live in the vast Arctic, about half as many as in Berlin. More and more scientists are drawn to the Arctic regions, especially to the glaciers of Greenland. The new research by a Danish team is alarming: it shows that large amounts of melt-water do not come from the surface of the Greenland ice sheet, but from particularly old ice layers from the bottom of the ice sheet. This deep melt-water carries with it a particularly large amount of climate-damaging methane. To the west of Greenland are Disko Bay and the town of Ilulissat. The icebergs around the bay offer a natural theatre with an ever-changing schedule. And make Ilulissat probably the most visited place in the Arctic. Visitors want to see the beauty of the ice masses that pile up in the fjord behind Ilulissat. The Icefjord has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site for years. Whales and other marine animals also benefit from the nutrients that the melt-water of the ancient glacier carries with it. In the east of Greenland, at the exit of Scoresbysund, the largest fjord system on earth, lies Ittoqqortoormiit. Probably the most remote settlement in Greenland has about 900 inhabitants. Dog sleds are used to hunt and catch seals. Sometimes a cruise ship breaks through the dwindling sea ice to Scoresbysund. This is a special event for the inhabitants of Ittoqqortoormiit, as well as for the tourists, who are given the opportunity to go sledding over the stable ice. Two of the small villages that existed in the area have been abandoned in recent years. The long winters are almost unbearable. Two and a half months without daylight. The opposite of a cruise brochure for educational travelers. See less
