Troubled by phantoms in the night, Sigourney seeks comfort from her mother, drawing on the close relationship which has been under pressure since her moving away. It is this relationship that Marlene, the elderly heir of a local estate, senses and hence chooses to impart her knowledge of the mystery. When Sigourney visits Marlene, the two form a connection and the story of Bella, whose body was found inside a wych elm on the property during the Second World War, is revealed: Marlene is the daughter of 'Bella', a local woman killed by Nazis who were targeting Greta, a German double agent. Greta witnessed this murder and adopted Bella's identity, raising Marlene as her own. Written by
