Montreal, or Montréal in French is the second-largest city in Canada and the largest city in the province of Quebec. Originally called Ville-Marie ('City of Mary'), some historians think the city takes its present name from the Mont Réal (as it was pronounced in Middle French, or Mont Royal / Mount Royal in present French), the three-head hill at the heart of the city, whose name was also initially given to the island on which the city is located. It is one of the largest French-speaking cities in the world. Population 1,854,000.
It was originally the site of the Iroquoian village of Hochelaga. The first European exploration was by Jacques Cartier, who visited the village in 1535 and estimated the village to have a thousand inhabitants. Samuel de Champlain visited the site in 1605, finding it abandoned due to disease and inter-tribal warfare. A fur trading post was established here in 1611. It became the major conduit for French exploration and exploitation of the continent. The British captured it in 1760 during the Seven Years' War and it was formally ceded to them in 1763. It was incorporated as a city in 1832 and made capital of the Province of Canada in 1844. The capital was moved when a mob burned the parliament building in 1849 in protest of British policies. It became a center of the underground alcohol trade during American Prohibition.
Montreal's metropolitan development peaked in the 1950s and '60s. The political crisis over Quebecois nationalism in the 1970s, including the terrorist campaign of the FLQ, resulted in a decline in the city's fortunes, despite hosting the summer Olympics in 1976. In 2002 Montreal was united with nearby municipalities on the island to create the unified City of Montreal, an unpopular move that resulted in deunification by several municipalities in 2006. Montreal remains the largest inland port in the world, as well as the headquarters of the Canadian Space Agency, as well as the Royal Bank of Canada and the Bank of Montreal. Major universities including McGill and the University of Montreal are located here.
