I wish the author had an appendix for recommended customization profiles for each specific type of photography.

This is what Sony should include with the camera - its fabulously clear and and I was able to get my head round topics more easily, for example, flash.
I find Kindle on an iPhone too fiddly but never tried on an iPad. I think the book might be better. The author kindly provided me with a pdf, which is glorious to read on any device.
I am of a split mind about this book, for several reasons. To start with, it's a sizable book, quite dense, with not too many photos (surprisingly, to my mind). On the positive side, the book is exhaustive in its coverage of every single option available on the RX1R. Every setting I was interested in was explained, with options covered when associated functions are necessary, and the level of detail is excellent. What I found problematic with the book is preceisly the level of detail that is so thorough: it's a boring read working through the chapters, which are basically a list with explanations, and it's lack of engagement had me putting the book down more often than I would have liked. Finding details about submenus is sometimes a bit time-consuming, too. This is not a book about photography and how to take photographs. As the name of he book implies ("Photographer's Guide..." it's a book about the camera, and leaves much of the technique of photography to the reader, unmentioned in the book except where settings can be used for photographic effects. This is a reference book to the camera's workings, not a "try this for this kind of effect" book.
As a guide to the RX1R's settings, menus, and options, this is an excellent level of detail and covers everything you could expect to need. As a guide to using the RX1R to take photos, with tips and tricks, it falls short. It depends on what you expect from the book...
