Product Description

The writer of the Shield and the producer of the Sopranos bring you the most ruthless adrenaline-packed new drama of 2009. With over 40 minutes of unaired scenes, the DVD takes you even deeper in the unexplored world of this outlaw Californian Motorcycle Club as its members struggle to balance family life and weapon-trafficking business.

Amazon.com

The roar of a motorcycle can signal freedom--or trouble. Sons of Anarchy examines a biker gang from both perspectives, as Jackson "Jax" Teller (Charlie Hunnam, Nicholas Nickleby) struggles between loyalty to the Sons of Anarchy Motorcycle Club, Redwood Originals (aka SAMCRO or "Sam Crow," which his dead father founded) and doubts about the criminal and often brutal actions the club demands of him. The series opens with a rival gang stealing the Sons' stash of guns and the premature birth of Jax's son, two events that sow questions in Jax's mind about the life he's leading. Over the course of the season, these questions will spark dangerous conflict with the gang's leader, Clay Morrow (Ron Perlman, Hellboy) and with his own mother, Gemma (Katey Sagal, Married with Children), who's now married to Clay. Despite the macho setting, Gemma is the standout character of the first season of Sons of Anarchy: fierce and manipulative, she sets the good of the club (and her own desires) above everything else--even her love for her son. Despite the lingering presence of his junkie ex-wife (Drea de Matteo, The Sopranos), Jax finds himself drawn to his high school sweetheart, Tara Knowles (Maggie Siff, Mad Men), now a doctor, and who saved his son's life.

Throughout the first season of Sons of Anarchy, SAMCRO grapples with a multicultural array of foes: Hispanic bikers, African-American gangbangers, white supremacists, an Asian triad, and agents of the ATF. Uneasy alliances and precarious compromises rarely work out as planned, leading to nail-biting confrontations and headaches for Jax. But the rituals and emotional bonds of the club itself are the real subject of the show--how an institution built on friendship and family loyalty gets twisted by ambition and greed. One particularly compelling story line follows Jax and his best friend, Opie (Ryan Hurst, Remember the Titans), who had stepped away from the gang to make peace with his wife; to help Jax, he reenters the biker life, with horrific consequences. The creator of Sons of Anarchy, Kurt Sutter, was a writer and actor on The Shield, and fans of that show will find a similarly compelling mixture of scheming machinations and compromised morality here, grounded in excellent performances and vivid production. --Bret Fetzer

I didn't watch the show when it first came out, so I really didn't know what it entailed. It captured me immediately. Although a little more violent than I prefer, I truly got caught up in the biker world and found it intriguing. Jackson was a great character--utterly captivating. However, without the other strong characters behind him, it would have lacked substance. If one watches the first episode--the rest will follow. It's addicting.

Review: Sons of Anarchy - Seasons 1 thru 5
5+++ Stars
Review Date: May 24th 2013

I have been MIA on my blog and I wanted to let you guys know why so I decided to do a "review" for Sons of Anarchy (SOA). This is because I just did a five day binge of this TV show on Netflix and I LOVED it!!!! I did absolutely no reading - and that is saying something...

I am unfamiliar with doing reviews for TV shows so bear with me. Here it goes...

I have heard about SOA before and how great it is but I am not a "TV" person, obviously I'm more of a bookworm, so it took a while to check it out. I had just finished reading Unbeautifully by Madeline Sheehan and I LOVED it - like I LOVED Undeniable (and liked Reapers Property too). So I decided that I might like a TV show about the MC (motorcycle club) life too. And I did. Hence, the five day binge.

SOA is about an MC named "SAMCRO" which stands for Sons of Anarchy Motorcycle Club Redwood Original. It is the "original" -> first SOA chapter, and is located in Charming a small town in northern California, but there are currently chapters throughout the US, and one in Belfast, Ireland (there may be more, IDK).

The main characters are Charlie Hunnam, Katy Segal (formerly Peg in Married with Children), Ron Perlman, Maggie Siff, Kim Coates, Mark Boone, Tommy Flanagan, Ryan Hurst, Theo Rossi, and Dayton Callie.

Charlie Hunnan plays Jackson "Jax" Teller, the lead actor and Vice President of SOA and the son of the founder and former president. He is in his early thirties and is basically finding himself as a person and a member of SOA. In the first episode he finds a manuscript his father wrote before he died (in 1992) basically stating that he thought things were going in the wrong direction for the club, and that he envisioned more of a brotherhood and less criminal activity when he founded SOA. Jax appears to feel the same way and this has him conflicted to say the least.

Jax is a complex individual, extremely smart, sexy, charming, and has a big heart. But he is also a biker. This means he is also rough, smokes, drinks a lot, uses women, and lives as an outlaw with his own set of codes and beliefs. He has never taken a life at the beginning of season one but that changes drastically as the show evolves.

Jax's mother Gemma Teller-Morrow played by Katy Segal, is also a complex individual but has little in the way of a conscience or morals. She is willing to do anything to further her own agenda, including playing with the very lives of the other characters. Sometimes I like her, but at others I can't stand her--like I said she is complex.

Each character has their own multifaceted persona's. I became invested in each one of them, sometimes I hated them but mostly I loved them. I understood why they had to do many of the horrible things they did--meaning when a person lives outside the law they are no longer protected from it. They have to take the law into their own hands, I get it. This is not just a small time MC, it's a hard-core biker gang dealing with big players including the heads of the IRA (Irish Republican Army), Mexican drug cartels, and of course other gangs.

Now onto my take of it. Yes I said I loved it but why? Because I became extremely emotionally invested in the characters and the storyline. I cried hard and often. But I also laughed my ass off too many times to count. There is a darkly comedic undertone to SOA. This is what made the show brilliant--the ability to bring out the full spectrum of emotions. I could literally be sobbing one second then cracking up the next. I cannot remember ever being so emotionally invested and so thoroughly entertained by a show before...

If you cannot handle violence DO NOT watch this show. It is extremely graphic. And it is not a romance. It does have enough romance to keep me interested but not a lot. Jax's love life is one of the primary themes but it does not overpower the show at all. It was obviously made this way for men to like it as much if not more than woman, but Jax is way too hot for women not to have been considered when casting.

I highly recommend you at least watch the pilot to see if this show may be for you. The first four seasons are on Netflix and the fifth season I pain twenty bucks for on Amazon. It was worth it. The sixth season starts next fall. It ends on a cliffhanger so be prepared. But a few of the other seasons ended that way so I was not all that surprised.

and I was pleasantly surprised. FIrst of all, I'm a big fan of the Sopranos and here's why: It was one of the first shows I ever watched that portrayed the "bad guys" in shades of grey rather than characters capable of only evil. The dichotomy created by making the evil-doers on the show act like "regular people" capable of regular emotions and then allowing these same people to do what many of us would find unthinkable makes for some incredibly entertaining television. The Sons does this...and it does it well.

Granted, it's not always stellar programming. I almost wish these kind of shows would be on HBO or Showtime because anytime there's a love scene it sorta breaks the fourth wall. I'm also not really a fan of Katy Segal's ability to see every major plot point on the show. For example, each show usually has two major plot lines: one focused on whatever caper the crew is up to and the other focused on some sort of internal drama affecting the crew. Well for the internal drama Katy Segal is usually right there to witness every crucial event and move the story along. Might not sound too bad but it gets really old after awhile. There were times where Katy, at an event of about 50 people, would just conveniently be at the right place at the right time to witness something. Or maybe an ancillary character is at a grocery and bounces a check and Katy just so happens to be at the same store. It's almost like the writers couldn't figure out a way to move the story along so they used her as a means to get the plot moving. She does an excellent job acting on the show (as does most of the cast btw), but by the 6th episode I just knew she would show up anytime there was something pertaining to the second plot line in an episode.

But that aside, you're probably wondering what the show's about. Sons is focused on a biker gang based in a small town in California that operate out of a auto mechanic shop. The mechanic shop is the front and the real money is made via selling guns. There are rival crews, crooked cops, internal drama and all sorts of other things that occur along the way to make for interesting television. The main character seems to be Jax, who is the 30-year old second in command who's father was also in the Sons. Jax's mother is played by Peggy Bundy and the leader of the Sons, and Peggy's boyfriend on the show, is Ron Perlman (the guy with the most unique face ever).

The stories are varied and, so far, incredibly innovative. As I mentioned before, it really makes for great television when the bad guys sometimes have a higher moral compass than the good guys and, conversely, the good guys behave in ways the bad guys never would. The key thing is that the show doesn't let you get too comfortable with the Sons. Anytime I found myself rooting for them I was quickly reminded how they are brutal criminals responsible for a variety of violent crimes.

I'm six episodes in and so far the show has been great. The bikers all look the part (although I'm not too sure why the actor who plays Jax thinks walking like George Jefferson circa 1970 is a tough guy walk) and the angle is intriguing. In a world where everyone is content to copy what the other guys are doing it was cool to get something like this. If you're into crime-dramas and find biker gangs somewhat interesting then I strongly recommend this show...especially if you have Amazon Prime and

5.0 out of 5 stars Addicting Series!
Reviewed in Canada on September 6, 2010
This show isn't on TV in Canada but I heard about it through a motorcycle forum and then noticed our video store had it. I found myself saying during the first 3 episodes, "why are you watching this trailer trash?" (I didn't need more shows to be addicted to), but being a rider myself and interested in the life of MCs, I gave it the first disc. Well I am now hooked. This is one amazing series with well know actors, great acting, and lots of action. I suppose one of the reasons I love this show is that I feel like a voyeur looking into the life of an MC. It has a way of making you feel like you are one of the family looking in. I can see the attraction to joining an MC as the show does a fine job of portraying the sense of belonging and family that so many long for. On the other hand, some of the things this family does is hard to watch - it still is a criminal gang that engages in gun running, murders, torture, and the porn industry (thankfully tho that is short lived). This is a gritty show like The Shield was. If you liked The Shield, you'll love SOA.

I just finished re-watching Season 1 which made more sense to me this time - all the relationships, business deals, and gang rivalries. The DVD set is worth getting for the Special Features - the bikes, the ink, the set, etc. This is a unique show that will be a classic!
