Happy at first - and then it popped - Now I'm happy with the warranty replacement
4 Stars
Happy at first - and then it popped - Now I'm happy with the warranty replacement
Original 5-star rating - After a dozen or more nights use over the last two months, I've been very pleased with this bed. Weighing in at 250 lbs, I've found other inflatable beds to be slightly better than making a pallet and sleeping on the floor. First, this bed holds its shape and does not balloon out on the sides. Second, it maintains its firmness throughout the night even near the edges. The main pump inflates the bed in 2.5 minutes and the secondary pump might run another 15 or so minutes before shutting off the first time. The secondary pump is very quite, much like a fish tank air pump, and can hardly be distinguished over other household white noise even when my head is just a foot or two away. And after a good nights sleep, I really appreciate that I can roll over and get right out of the bed on to my feet instead of having it sag half way to the floor, rolling over on to my knees and then stand up.UPDATE - Changed to a 1-star rating - one week after I gave this bed a 5-star review it popped a hole. Right in the seam of the coil like others have stated. Amazon says it's too late to return to them. We'll update again once I contact the manufacturer. Meanwhile I'm sleeping on the floor tonight.UPDATE - Changed to a 4-star - After some initial issues contacting customer service, (see comments section) once I made contact they were very courteous, asked few question (I'd sent the photo of the rip) and we received a free warranty replacement within a week. Although I've not slept on the replacement bed yet, it has been inflated for two days and is still the same firmness even though I did not turn on the Never Flat pump.

We live in Japan, where living space is already a premium. Parents were visiting and we ordered this 3 wks before their arrival. To our mild surprise, it arrived to FPO/APO with more than a week to spare. Kudos to Amazon for that. Now for the product. This thing is great. At first I was skeptical (more or less since my wife is the one that scoped it out, reviewed and purchased it online, which she normally doesn't do, but since I was procrastinating she took it into her own hands. Or, to give you a better picture, I'm an engineer, so I scrutinize stuff like this, ok actually all stuff, that I tend to purchase, online or not...) Anyway, I mentally prepared by reading the reviews (keep in mind, I'm doing this after it was already purchased and shipped). So, from the prior reviews, I was humbled and shrugging my shoulders like, "Ok, this might turn out pretty good!" (Actually, I was really thinking, "My wife saved the day again, b/c I would have totally forgotten, again, to buy a blowup bed in preps for my parents visit, and then I'd have to scramble last minute, run to the store the day before their arrival, and waste money on a futon...phew.") When it showed up, naturally, I had to test it out. Easy to setup. You'd have to really try to screw it up. Basically, unfold it, plug it in, set the anticipated firmness level, then turn to automatic, then walk away. It'll blowup and shutoff automatically. Additionally, it'll maintain whatever firmness you set it at. And it does so quietly, you can't even hear it over ambient noise. Comes with a handy bag to pack it up into every morning, if you so desire, to deflate and get it "out of the way". Easy easy easy. Comfortable too. Regular queen size fitted sheets fit no problems. Don't worry about the height; if you put the fitted sheets on properly, nice & tight and pulled all the way down on all four sides. Made of good quality materials and, unless you're completely careless with products you spend your well hard-earned money with or you receive a defective product, I see this lasting quite a while.

No external pump to stash. Only the power cord, which you conveniently roll up and fold and place into the round plastic cup next to the internal pump. Easy, automatic, folds up nicely and compact into a handbag, and neatly. And last but definitely should've been first, it's comfortable! Worth every penny. Wife gets kudos; steppin it up! Definitely got daughter-in law brownie points when I raved how she picked it out, after my parents were amazed at how comfy and well they slept on it. They visited 9 days and each day they praised it more and more, and slept better and better.

update 08/02/2013. Well it finally happened after a year and a half. The bed blew out. One of the depressions on the top of the bed completely blew out of the top of the bed while i was sleeping on it. Hit the floor in one big hurry. There is no fixing it. Well i am not complaining because it out lasted any other mattress i have had. I weigh 400 pounds and that kind of weight destroys any kind of bed after time. Well i have another new one in the box that has been sitting in the box for over a year. Now we will see how long this one lasts. It is time to get the silicone seal out.

The video is a updated video after having this mattress 10 months and sleeping on it every single day. I have only had this mattress a week now but have run several tests on it. The first thing is at the end of this review I put the warranty from Wenzel. Nobody ever talks about the warranty on air mattresses. I also called the number below and talk to a customer service rep about the mattress. I am required to sleep on an air mattress because of my medical condition so I have had a lot of air mattresses in the last ten years. All air mattress leak air! They are not really leaks such as a puncture. The vinyl has pores in it so they leak down, some worse than other depending on the quality of the vinyl. I have owned air mattresses cheaper than this one and much more expensive than this one. My experience on air mattresses that you either get a good one or a bad one no matter what you pay for it. The worst trouble I had with any air mattress was one that cost over $400.00. This insta bed with the never flat is the one to own. Forget the ones with the remote control. You have to inflate or deflate the mattress with the remote but you can never get the mattress to be the same exact consistency from the last time you filled it up. Waking up in the middle of the night to inflate the bed is a pain in the you know what. This bed has only three settings. It has plush, medium, and firm. If you need more than this than you need to go sleep on a cloud in heaven. The first thing I did was inflate the bed like the instructions say. That right folks I read instructions! I selected firm and turned it on. This bed will turn itself off when it reaches the right firmness so you don't have to sit and watch it and worry about over inflating which ruins the mattress. I let it sit for 4 hours unplugged than I plugged it back in. The never flat pump came on and ran exactly one and a half minutes and shut off. The air that is being pump into the mattress is actually warm air that relaxes the vinyl. Some people say the never flat pump is loud. All I can say on the bed I received I can't even hear it at all. I only know it is running because of the red light that lights up. I Velcro a yard stick to the side of the bed at the exact height of my table in the bedroom. I laid down on the bed and the yard stick drop ½ inch below the table and the never flat pump came on. In one minute the never flat pump had the bed right back up to the height of the table top and turn itself off. I don't know how long all this electronic stuff will last but if it does you won't have to inflate or deflate anything ever again. I deflated the air mattress and it is automatic. It not only sucks ever drop of air out of the mattress but shuts itself off. It fits easily right back into the duffel bag it comes with. Well only time will tell how well it holds up but right now I think it is great.

update 5/11/2013: Well i have had it over a year now and it is still giving me terrific service

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Quality Air Bed - Super happy with our choice!
Reviewed in Canada on January 29, 2021
Excellent mattress!

We bought a cheaper one first at $129 Cdn. and I was a bit worried about the quality and how it would stand up over time. I've come to learn that air mattresses vary widely in quality and you DO get what you pay for. As soon as I took the Insta-Bed out of the box, I could tell it was far superior in quality. It was heavier which was a good sign and I could just feel that the PVC was a heavier gauge, meaning it would stand up to more use and be a much better value in the long run. It inflated super fast (much faster than the cheaper one we'd bought), and reviewers who say that the secondary pump is quiet are right! It's a very low hum and as long as your head is at the other end, you will not hear it, even in the quietest room.

I also didn't like how the other air bed had a built-in pillow. Many are like that and it's silly because it doesn't actually feel like a pillow and then when you put your actual pillow on it, your head is now too high! Regular mattresses don't have built-in pillows so I don't know why some of these would. Oh, maybe for camping so that you don't have to bring a pillow? That makes sense. So, if you're buying one to use indoors in a guest room like us, you do NOT want the built-in pillow - trust me, as you'll be using real pillows.

I really like how you can choose the firmness level with the adjusting ring, and then just turn the dial and let it go. You can walk away and it will shut-off when ready. No need to babysit it or try and guess how much air is too much. Great feature!

I am SO glad that we decided to spend the extra money and go with the Insta-bed. My mom will be very happy.

Now, having said all that, I don't like any of these mattresses completely until you have a memory foam topper on top. Only then will it feel super comfortable and feel like a "real" bed. I bought the Bedstory 3" queen-sized topper on Amazon for $179.99 and it's heaven! Sure, you have to store it but it's worth it. It's wonderful. These two products together make for a fantastic sleep experience.

I noticed that if you're on the bed by yourself, you don't want to sleep in the middle. There's a bit of a hump which I guess is part of the interior construction. It's okay, just a bit too firm in that one spot. Not a big deal as most people would sleep on one side or the other or both if it's a couple. Not a deterrent by any means.

We are very happy with our purchase and wouldn't buy a different brand in future.

Go for it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Muy funcional y practico!
Reviewed in Mexico on July 4, 2017

5.0 out of 5 stars Just what we needed!
Reviewed in Canada on February 25, 2023
We needed a quick spare bed for when one of us needs to sleep in the other room, such as one being sick etc. This bed is perfect! It's easy to set up, super fast inflating (like maybe 2 mins?) and has great firm to plush settings. I sleep in a firm bed and have slept on the mattress for a week now with no back or body soreness.

I turned off the auto refill and had no issues of the mattress deflating much to notice (its definitely quieter than the regular inflate setting but I hated hearing the noise at night) I highly recommend this bed for anyone needing a quick spare bed set up, it's worth every penny!

1.0 out of 5 stars Great bed - until it fails (2 out of 2 beds failed!)
Reviewed in Canada on March 24, 2014
The only downside of this bed (and I knew this ahead of time) is that it can be cold to sleep on if you don't have a mattress pad (this is a problem with all inflatable beds, and we remedied it by buying a 2.5" memory foam mattress pad).

Other than that, I think this bed is great. I've slept on it probably 10 times or so, so I can't really comment on its long-term durability, but I can say that it's very comfortable (especially with the mattress pad) and I've never seen it lose air (I keep mine plugged in all the time, and I've also never heard any noise at all while it was plugged in).

It deflates quickly (and automatically), and I find it quite easy to fold up and put in its bag. The mattress pad is actually significantly bulkier than the bed itself (and that is something to consider...it's much easier to find a place to store the bed than the mattress pad).

Anyway, I would definitely recommend this bed.

*** EDIT 2017-11-02 ***

Well, I used the bed for about three months or so after our first daughter was born, and everything was fine. Fast forward to two and a half years later (following the birth of our second daughter): I've been using the bed for about a week and a half now, and yesterday when I went to use it I noticed that it had developed a large leak in the seam around the pump unit, rendering it unusable. Coincidentally, my mother (who bought this same bed on my recommendation a few years ago and has probably used it about as much as we have since then) just told me last week that her bed has also sprung a leak in the exact same place.

I emailed insta-bed about it, and they told me that it's unfixable but kindly offered me 25% off a new bed. Sorry insta-bed, you've lost me as a customer forever. I warn anyone against purchasing this bed.

Well made. Never flat pump kept bed pumped up at night and never woke my guests. They said they were comfortable..I have a guest staying the night after a concert, so we shall see what she thinks. BUT as of 4 night try...it worked like a charm. Easy up, easy down! Easy to store away! A little noise when they moved around came from the surface of the mattress. I had sheet set on. But no complaints from visitors! I'm happy. Good purchase!
