Explore the works of Thomas Sowell In this instant New York Times bestseller, renowned economist Thomas Sowell demolishes the myths that underpin the social justice movement In The Vision of the Anointed, Thomas Sowell presents a devastating critique of the mind-set behind the failed social policies of the past thirty years. Economic Facts and Fallacies exposes some of the most popular fallacies about economic issues-and does so in a lively manner and without requiring any prior knowledge of economics by the reader. Discrimination and Disparities gathers a wide array of empirical evidence to challenge the idea that different economic outcomes can be explained by any one factor, be it discrimination, exploitation, or genetics. A Conflict of Visions offers a convincing case that ethical and policy disputes circle around the disparity between both outlooks. A one-volume introduction to over three decades of the wide-ranging writings of one of America's most respected and cited authors

I was blown away by how Mr. Sowell reaches into history and explains why most government programs and proposals to mitigate the economic problems of minorities don't work. I doubt he left out a single racial or ethnic group in this book, showing how they have adapted to situations, with the implication that our current policies are doomed to continue failing. This is a very insightful work and worthwhile to help you appreciate cultures far different from our own.

This is an excellent book. I used it for research in a paper I was doing for school and the insights from the amazing mind of Dr. Thomas Sowell made for a crucial addition to my work. I highly recommend this and many other books by this author and brilliant man.

If you know of Thomas Sowell, you either love him or you dislike him. He is so disarmingly truthful, so matter of fact, that it's hard to become inflamed, when he disassembles your cherished beliefs. That is probably why the hard left mostly ignores him.

It's arguable that he is the U.S.'s greatest intellectual of the early 21st century. His legacy will endure and perhaps grow past his lifetime.

When I read this or any of his books, my understanding expands; many (perhaps most) differences within a society and among groups have a variety of causes. Some of those causes are intractable, like geography. Some of those causes are inherited, like the culture you imbibe from your family as a child. I become more knowledgeable when I read him, and hopefully a bit more humble and a bit wiser. He's not any easy read, but he's worth the effort.

This is a very well written and researched book. Especially if you are tired of hearing/reading about all the social justice crap on the news and social media. He provides many references for his claims and makes sense out of so much going on in society.

I was afraid that the subject matter might be a little dated because this was written in the ‘90s, but I was wrong. If anything, the insights in this book prove to be somewhat prophetic about how race and culture impact our world today. I especially found the themes that Sowell pointed out as misinterpretations or deliberately discounted to be even more prevalent in 2022.

5.0 out of 5 stars Intelligent and Balanced

For people unfamiliar with Thomas Sowell, he is a black American conservative economist with a long and distinguished career in academia (interestingly, he was a Marxist in his student years). His is a towering intellect, and he has a gift for explaining the real factors behind difficult topics, such as racial inequality, albeit sometimes a bit too patiently and painstakingly. He rejects the simplistic assertion that any inequity must be the result of discrimination.

In this book, he tackles issues such as slavery, culture and intelligence, never shying away from difficult questions or conclusions. He discusses the different outcomes for various minority groups who started from similar positions of disadvantage, and with similar resources available to them, and shows how culture played a part in determining success or failure. He rightly dismisses the notion that all cultures are somehow equal, or that failing cultures have any inherent right to survive.

The chapter on race and slavery is especially enlightening. While most of the discussion today is focused solely on the Atlantic slave trade, with a view to condemning the West from a moral standpoint, Sowell places this trade in its true historical context. In so doing, he raises some interesting points which run counter to the prevailing narrative. He remains refreshingly fact-based and empirical in his arguments.

Reading Thomas Sowell is time well spent, and this book is as good a place as any to start.
