“Revelatory…fascinating” (The New York Times): The first definitive biography of Bob Hope, featuring exclusive and extensive reporting that makes the persuasive case that he was the most important entertainer of the twentieth century.

With his topical jokes and his all-American, brash-but-cowardly screen character, Bob Hope was the only entertainer to achieve top-rated success in every major mass-entertainment medium of the century, from vaudeville in the 1920s all the way to television in the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s. He virtually invented modern stand-up comedy. Above all, he helped redefine the very notion of what it means to be a star: a savvy businessman, an enterprising builder of his own brand, and a public-spirited entertainer whose Christmas military tours and unflagging work for charity set the standard for public service in Hollywood.

As Richard Zoglin shows in this “entertaining and important book” (
The Wall Street Journal), there is still much to be learned about this most public of figures, from his secret first marriage and his stint in reform school, to his indiscriminate womanizing and his ambivalent relationships with Bing Crosby and Johnny Carson. Hope could be cold, self-centered, tight with a buck, and perhaps the least introspective man in Hollywood. But he was also a tireless worker, devoted to his fans, and generous with friends.

“Scrupulously researched, likely definitive, and as entertaining and as important (to an understanding of twentieth- and twenty-first-century pop culture) as its subject once genuinely was” (
Vanity Fair), Hope is both a celebration of the entertainer and a complex portrait of a gifted but flawed man. “A wonderful biography,” says Woody Allen. “For me, it’s a feast.”

“Revelatory…unabashedly ambitious…fascinating.” ― New York Times

“Terrific—scrupulously researched, likely definitive, and as entertaining and as important (to an understanding of 20th- and 21st-century pop culture) as its subject once genuinely was.” ―
Vanity Fair

“A Bob Hope bio even millennials can love…As Zoglin vividly demonstrates here, Hope, who died in 2003, was a groundbreaker—a song-and-dance man who was also one of the inventors of stand-up comedy. Hope took great humanity, spectacular delivery and ordinary material and somehow transformed himself into one of the best-loved cultural icons of the age. Whether or not you’ve heard of him, this insightful bio is worth a read.” ―
People

"A wonderful biography by Richard Zoglin. For me it's a feast." -- Woody Allen

“Richard Zoglin’s biography
Hope does such an effective job of arguing the appeal that even the Hope-hater comes away eager to see more of his good early work, and more sympathetic to the forces in his life and in the country’s which left him hard to like at the end.” -- Adam Gopnik ― New Yorker

“Bob Hope was an entertainment colossus, shrewd and influential well beyond show business. Richard Zoglin’s biography captures it all—the public and private Hope.” -- Tom Brokaw

"Richard Zoglin's fascinating biography is as close as we're ever going to get to one of the most opaque human beings ever to become justifiably world-famous. Bob Hope lived so long that it's easy to forget how original he was, not to mention brilliantly funny and attractive. It's all here: the women, the politics, the amazing career, the selfless devotion to American soldiers, the unexpected empathy, and, thank God, the laughter." -- Scott Eyman, author of John Wayne

“Bob Hope may indeed have been the most popular comedian of the 20th century, yet he probably is unknown to most Millennials, which is why Richard Zoglin's invaluable biography is so vital.” ―
USA Today

“This beautifully written volume is, at last,
the book about Bob Hope. Zoglin covers everything: the early life, the sky-rocketing triumphs in every medium, the life-risking—and ego-feeding—patriotism that spanned the globe, bringing laughter (and gorgeous ladies) to our troops in wartime, the wealth, the women, the quirks, the warts, the temper, the cheapness, the touching generosity, the fabulous talent and the genius-managed career." -- Dick Cavett

“An entertaining and important book.” ―
The Wall Street Journal

“Important…Zoglin has put together a fair-minded book about Hope as an entertainer and as a person, and tells a far more compelling story than can be found in some tossed-off snark. Don’t just ask your grandparents. Read Zoglin.” ―
Akron Beacon-Journal

“A thorough, evenhanded and absorbing portrait.” ―
Associated Press

“Bob Hope lived to be 100. And even in death he has retained a kind of ubiquity. Let Richard Zoglin draw it for you in the introduction to what is one of the necessary American books – the definitive biography of one of the holy monsters of American show business.” ―
Buffalo News

“[Zoglin] does a superb job in fetching all the mostly-forgotten versions of Hope and soberly parading them past us without too much hyperbole…. a good guide to the century of Bob Hope.” ―
Boston Globe

"A definitive biography of this legendary performer has long been overdue, an undertaking
Time magazine theater critic Zoglin completes here with great attention to detail and commendable skill. . . . Not just for Hope fans, Zoglin’s work will also appeal to readers interested in the colorful history of American entertainment, in which Hope played a prominent role." -- Carl Hays ― Booklist

“The definitive biography of the legendary comedian…In this rich and entertaining work, Zoglin pulls no punches but also remains an astonished admirer.” ―
Kirkus (starred review)

“A crackerjack biography.” ―

Thanks for the Memories, Bob

Thanks for the Memories, Bob
Richard Zoglin portrays Bob Hope with all his admirable talents, skills and attributes and with probably all the many warts the great entertainer possessed. If you want warts first, Hope was a serial adulterer, cheating on his wife especially when he was on the road and that was most of the time. He was cheap, particularly for a man with as many millions (and later hundreds of millions). He carried grudges. Bing Crosby and his wife never invited them to dinner, and for that slight Hope once said he never did like "the sonovabitch." He seemed to have a particular dislike for actress Dorothy Lamour and exercised his dislike by relegating her to small parts in later "Road" films.Every coin has two sides, however, and Bob Hope's other side was as the most brilliant comedian of the 20th century. No one ever came close to be a real competitor of song, dance, and comedy. He invented the stand up routine all comics use now when they host a television program. Jokes and gags first, then the rest of the show. Think Johnny Carson and his many imitators.A word of caution: don't say anything unkind about Hope to servicemen he entertained overseas. He was the guy who brought GIs and sailors the beautiful girls, the band, the singers, the dancers, the jokes about generals and admirals, and always the ubiquitous golf club, sometimes into combat zones. All his shows, live or on tape, in a studio or a giant auditorium, ended with specially written lyrics for the location, "Thanks for the Memory," a song that nearly got cut out of his breakthrough movie career in "The Big Broadcast of 1938." If you've never heard the original as he sang it with Shirley Ross you owe it to yourself to get a copy. No one writes lyrics like that any more. Seethe photo with this review.Anyone who enjoys reading about show business, Broadway and Hollywood gossip, which stars Bob Hope slept with, and his numerous gaffes will enjoy Hope: Entertainer of the Century.

This is the book that all real Bob Hope fans have been waiting for. Zoglin has undertaken considerable original research, reviewed credible material already published and weaved it together with many interviews and has published a beautifully written and quite thorough treatment of Bob Hope's completely amazing life. It almost seems that Hope wasn't even human--He "squeezed" more work and energy into a year than most of us accomplish in five (or more) years. He was simply tireless which when combined with his bottomless gifts (comedy, singing, dancing and acting) led to a sensational and outstanding career that spanned most of the twentieth century.

There's something here for all kinds of readers. It's a whirlwind through late vaudeville to early Broadway, Bob's unbelievable run making movies at Paramount Studios in Hollywood while simultaneously broadcasting a national radio show at the NBC studios at Sunset and Vine and then watching Bob parlay all of that into a fantastic run on television, mostly at NBC's Burbank studios. If all of that wasn't enough, as WW II broke out, Bob began broadcasting his radio shows from military bases throughout the world (in many cases in very dangerous areas), authored (with ghost writers) 14 books and hosted 18 Oscar broadcasts. On top of all of that, he appeared in thousands of personal appearances at concert halls, state fairs, colleges and charity banquets and created an investment portfolio that totaled over $300 million.

Zoglin--dutifully--describes Hope's voluminous extramarital affairs, a running theme through the book but strangely, since his wife, Dolores, seems to live comfortably with it, it doesn't really take anything away from Bob's legacy. According to Zoglin's research, it isn't even clear if Bob was legally married to Dolores which may have been a good thing (legally) since there is no evidence that Bob ever had a divorce from his two-year marriage to his first wife.

Zoglin takes the time to offer brief descriptions and criticism of virtually every Bob Hope movie and captures Hope's skills that made him such a box office draw in the forties and fifties. You will want to watch or re-watch many of these movies after reading this book.

Finally, I thought that the author did a particularly good job in describing "late" Bob Hope, i.e., those years when Bob worked--but shouldn't have. These passages are painful for a real fan to read but it's all here and you will want to read it.

Bottom Line: This is a fantastic book about one of the greatest entertainers who ever lived. Zoglin has vividly presented the energy, enthusiasm, zip and bounce that made Bob Hope who he was. I have already begun to review Bob's work starting with watching some of his opening monologues from some of the specials that he did in the fifties that are available on YouTube. This book will give you the skills and knowledge to enjoy Bob's work with a terrific appreciation of the wonder that was Bob Hope.

Richard Zoglin is a senior editor at Time Magazine (translation he has time to write a biography of Bob Hope). Zoglin has been covering media for more than 20 years at Time and is old enough to have lived a good deal of Bob Hope's life. It shows. Zoglin understand the different media cultures that Hope transcended and/or survived. The biography is as much a cultural biography of the 30s in radio, wartime 40s when Hope created the pattern of his live entertainment shows first to troops and then on to post-war civilians and soldiers, into the TV era, and finally the "Hope stayed around too long" era. It is a prodigious trip and well written. The first half of the book includes more detail than I found necessary of the individual shows and programs that are the Hope playbill, but it is also a valuable compendium of the prodigious level of performance this entertainer produced. I kept wishing for more personal insight into Hope, and Zoglin tries via access he acknowledges to family and colleagues. What emerges is an entertainer who all but invented today's stand-up comedy format, along with the variety show format that TV and the stage have left behind, but behind the entertainer: there isn't much there. Hope was neither intellect, nor reader. He was an incurious man apart from his micromanaging personality when it came to conducting his lucrative businesses and another invention: branding his personality. But lift the rug, and there is not that much there. It is hard to imagine anyone trying a more complete biography of this iconic American entertainer.

Some interesting history of Bob Hope, but also inconsistencies. Also, Zoglin should have stuck to telling Bob Hope's story as his historical memories of the Vietnam War era were, for the most part, incorrect. At some points of the book his own words prove that!

A great biography about Bob Hope. Mr. Zoglin has done a wonderful job on one of the greatest entertainers on the 20th century. He starts from his humble beginnings in England, follows his journey to America and then his first beginnings as an entertainer. Hope was a part of all phases of entertainment in the 20th century. He started in vaudeville, then the stage on broadway and moved to radio where is star shown throughout America and eventually the world. His movies are well documented and along with his TV work. Also his treks overseas are well documented too. He also covers Hope's many affairs with other women. But does not dwell on them but does not try to cover them up either . He also covers well his slow downfall that started with his unwavering support of the Viet Nam war. But he never slipped into oblivion like most stars. He was performing right up until his early 90's when age finally took over. If you ever watch his many Christmas shows and specials especially with the troops you should read this book. It was excellent and for the size of the book a very fast read.

I was born in 1963. Most of what I remember of the Bob Hope specials were in the 1970s, when he was past his prime. Thanks for such wonderful revelation. I particularly enjoyed the chapter about the World War II years. Very detailed, well researched. At the same time, Zoglin pulled no punches about the end as well as his imperfections. Hope was a great name for a man who was filled with it and refused to give up his quest to reach the top in the entertainment world. This book describes in great detail how Bob Hope started from an impoverished boyhood in England and worked his way up through vaudeville, the early days of radio and finally into movies where he quickly became one of the screen's top comedy stars. To top this off, he then went into television where his show lasted for decades. However, the author tells us the plain truth of how Bob Hope alienated an entire generation of young people through his support of the Vietnam War and his many trips to entertain the troops serving there. Even in his later years, Bob would continue doing tours and appearing at benefits and fund raisers. Here was a man who was born to entertain and spent his life doing it. This book is a great read.
