Lily-Rose Depp Is Working Hard to ‘Protect a Sense of Anonymity’ as She Grows More Famous
Lily-Rose Depp may be one of Hollywood’s fastest growing talents, but she’s still trying to retain her privacy.
In an interview with The Daily Telegraph published on Dec. 29, the 25-year-old actress, who stars in the horror-remake Nosferatu, opened up about life in the public eye, emphasizing the weight she places on keeping certain elements of her life to herself.
“Every job comes with a set of circumstances and this [fame] is kind of one of them,” she said. “The importance to me has been to maintain a sense of, like, privacy and grounded-ness and to protect [what] really belongs to you.”
Depp, who is the daughter of Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis, made her first appearance on the silver screen in the 2014 film Tusk — but she gained rising star status after her performance as a pop star in the 2023 HBO show The Idol alongside The Weeknd.

As the spotlight has grown brighter, however, she’s come to realize that fame comes with certain baggage. “People are interested in things that they shouldn’t necessarily be interested in,” she told The Daily Telegraph.
“The job of an actor is to go into a character and, like, melt into it — and make the audience believe you are this character,” continued Depp. “In order to do that, it’s important to protect a sense of anonymity — they’re not supposed to get to know ‘you’ that well, ‘cause you want them to believe you as other characters.”
In the interview, she also detailed how she chooses her roles, noting that it “depends on where you’re at in the moment.”

“I’ve always been interested in taking on roles that feel quite different from each other,” the actress told the outlet. “For me, it’s like a new challenge to dive into another world.”
Though The Idol received mixed reviews from critics — it was cancelled after just one season — Depp has defended her performance. Speaking to Vanity Fair in November, she said, “We always knew some people were not going to like it and that it was going to be too much for some people. But I stand by it. We made a choice and we went for it.”

Depp, who has additionally starred in Yoga Hosers (2016), Planetarium (2016) and Silent Night (2021), told Vanity Fair that the hardest part of her Nosferatu role was "getting over the imposter syndrome of, like, ‘Why am I here and why do these people think that I can do this?’ "
"Getting to a place where I felt confident enough within myself to be like, 'I can do this and I am here for a reason,' I definitely have struggled with that," admitted Depp. "Humility is incredibly important, especially in this business. In a way, I always want to feel like I’m just starting out and like I still have so much to learn — which is how I do feel."
