These are the top baby names in NYC in 2023: Did yours make the list?

For the first time ever, Muhammad was ranked as one of the top 10 most popular baby names in the Big Apple.

The name tied for the No. 9 spot as one of the most common names for newborns in the city 2023 — landing among favorites that have been staples in the five boroughs for years, according to data released Friday.

Muhammad was just one of two names to break into the top 10 names for the first time ever, but its surge in popularity shouldn’t be too surprising — it was also the most common name given to baby boys in England and Wales in 2023.

The rest of the list, which ranked the top 10 girls’ and boys’ names for the year, showed that most parents overwhelmingly gravitated to the same four names that have reigned superior for the last several years.

Emma and Liam retained their spots as the most popular names throughout the five boroughs, with the name being bestowed upon 382 baby girls and 743 baby boys that year.

The numbers come within spitting distance of the total that were born the previous year.

The pair have held a firm grasp on the crown for years — Liam has been the number one name for boys since 2016 while Emma has been the top choice for girls since 2017.

And for another year in a row, Mia and Noah came in as second favorites among New Yorkers, with the latter retaining the silver spot since 2022.

“Our youngest New Yorkers are what make our city so special,” Acting Health Commissioner Dr. Michelle Morse said in a statement.

“We welcome Emma, Liam, Mia, Noah, and all the other newborns to New York. With your presence, our city is a more joyful, brighter place for the new year and beyond.”

The list of top 10 baby names shouldn’t be all too surprising, the Health Department said, with most appearing on the list in the past few years.

Sofia, for example, crawled its way into the No. 3 slot after being bumped out of the top 10 entirely in 2022 by Esther.

Isabella and Amelia gained two spaces in 2023, while Chloe emerged on the list for the first time since 2020.

For boys, David slid into the third spot, bumping Ethan all the way down to number seven, records show, while Michael — a previous favorite from 1980 to 2006 — made a surprising re-emergence to the top ten.

Dylan, along with Muhammad, also entered the top 10 list for the first time ever.

The Health Department also noticed various other trends in baby naming for 2023 — parents looked toward nature and mythological characters for plenty of inspiration.

Hundreds of Ares and Areuses were born that year, while Sage served as a popular gender-neutral name.

Vintage names like Maximus, Bernard and Harriet also made a comeback.

A total of 98,389 newborn New Yorkers were welcomed in 2023 — down from the 99,459 born in the previous year.

Most were born in Manhattan, with 39,484 welcomed to the borough. Another 22,297 and 20,148 were born in Brooklyn and Queens, respectively, and 10,613 were delivered in the Bronx. Just 5,847 were born on Staten Island.
