A rural route located north of Thornbury will be rebuilt later in January resulting in a major road closure scheduled to last nearly two weeks. The route in Oldbury-on-Severn connects Thornbury to villages such as Hill and requires rebuilding after 'significant settlement' was found.

Hill Lane/The Naite will close either side of Shepperdine Road at a distance of approximately 75 metres according to One.Network. South Gloucestershire Council said that the closure will begin from Monday, January 20 and will remain in place until Friday, January 31. The closure will be in effect 24/7.

According to the council, settlement has formed either side of a culvert that runs across the road, meaning that the existing carriageway will need to be dug out to a depth of 600mm (60cm). The road will be rebuilt with a stronger construction.

Culverts are man-made passages which allow water to pass under or around roads, bridges and tunnels. Settlement formation could cause water to be blocked and for disruption to the road via flooding.

A signposted diversion will be in place during the road closure. The diversion is just under seven miles in length and will see drivers use roads on the outskirts of Thornbury.

The diversion, starting on Hill Lane, follows:

  • Hill Lane

  • Nupdown Road (into Hill)

  • Hill Road (into Rockhampton)

  • Rockhampton Hill

  • Newton Hill

  • B4061 Gloucester Road (heading into Thornbury)

  • Butt Lane

  • Oldbury Lane

  • Foss Lane

  • The Naite
