A dad who lives with his teenage daughter and 80-year-old mum is facing eviction. Mohammed Khan lives in a two-bedroom property in Eastville with his family but has been served with a no-fault eviction notice.

The section 21 notice ordered the family to leave the property on December 3 but they have been unable to find an alternative private rental in Bristol.

Mr Khan, who previously worked in retail and hospitality, gave up work to become a carer for his elderly mother. He said: “We can’t find somewhere to rent privately because I am on Universal Credit and my mother is on Pension Credit.

“It’s not enough for the rent because we need to make at least three times the rent. My mother is 80 and needs a lot of care. I have been to the council a few times but they can’t do much.”

The family were initially served an eviction notice in 2023 but it was dropped in court because their landlord failed to provide a gas safety certificate.

The landlord is now being supported by Haart Estate Agents and is working with solicitors but the family has still not been able to find another property to rent despite having rented privately for over 18 years.

ACORN held a protest and spoke to staff at Haart on Whiteladies Road last week.

The community union ACORN is supporting the family. Last week members of ACORN tried to approach the landlord directly by turning up at his accountancy firm but the shutters were pulled down so they headed over to Haart on Whiteladies Road.

Mr Khan and his daughter say they appreciate the support given to them by ACORN, which is demanding the letting agency and landlord hold back on the court proceedings until the family secure another roof over their heads.

ACORN went to Adam House on Fishponds Road to speak to the landlord but the shutters were pulled down.

A spokesperson for Haart said: “We appreciate this is a difficult situation for all involved. As the letting agent, our role is to act on the instructions of the landlord, who first issued an eviction notice in September 2023 and would like to regain control of his property.

“We will continue to work hard with both parties to seek an agreeable resolution to the matter.”
