After Michael Vick speculation ends, Sacramento State reportedly set to hire UNLV's Brennan Marion
SACRAMENTO – Sacramento State football is reportedly set to bring on University of Nevada, Las Vegas assistant coach Brennan Marion to lead its program.
The move comes after speculation earlier in the week that Sacramento was talking with former NFL player Michael Vick as a possible head coaching candidate.
Sacramento State President Luke Wood did confirm that he and Vick met, but his statement made it clear that the school was considering other candidates as well.
"As you can imagine, given the success of our athletic programs, that our football head coach job is an attractive role. Announcements on several major decisions coming soon," Wood said.
On Wednesday, the Virginia native Vick announced that he would be taking the head coaching gig at Norfolk State University – ending all speculation that he could be coming to Sacramento.
At the same time, CBS Sports reported that Sacramento State was now zeroing in on Marion.
The 37-year-old Marion has been UNLV's offensive coordinator for the past two seasons. He's also had position coaching stops at Texas, Pitt and Hawaii – in contrast to Vick, who lacked coaching experience at both the college and pro level.
Marion also has roots in Northern California, where he played college ball at Foothill College and De Anza College. He also had a stop in Vallejo as a coach at St. Patrick-St. Vincent High School.
Sacramento State has not confirmed Marion's hiring.
