Police have issued a warning over prowling Coventry thieves who can strike in just a 'few seconds.' Drivers across the city have been urged to remain vigilant as they wake up to fog and ice-hit streets this morning (January 3).

Thieves are likely to take advantage of people leaving their vehicles to defrost on driveways, Coventry Police said. Officers said there is always a 'spike' in car thefts during frosty mornings.

Today is not only frosty, but the Met Office has also issued an ice warning for the weekend, which they say is likely to cause 'disruption' across the West Midlands. Snow is also expected on Saturday (January 4).

A spokesman for Coventry Police said: “Cold weather and ice are forecast for this weekend. You may need to defrost your vehicle in the morning.

“Thieves are looking for unattended vehicles with keys in the ignition. It takes seconds to steal a vehicle, but there are things you can do to prevent this.

“Wrap up warm and stay with your vehicle while it defrosts, buy a de-icer or a windscreen scraper to help your vehicle defrost quicker, and keep your keys and valuables close.

“Warn your neighbours not to leave their vehicles unattended. Officers are out on patrol in your neighbourhood looking out for car thieves.”
