A 34-year-old man has been charged in connection with a road traffic offence following a horror bus crash in Kilmarnock.

Eight people were taken to hospital after the Stagecoach vehicle smashed into a bridge on Culzean Crescent just before 2pm on Thursday, December 19.

The roof of the double decker was completely ripped off with no serious injuries sustained by passengers, according to officials.

Police confirmed today that a report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "A 34-year-old man has been charged in connection with a road traffic offence following a crash in Kilmarnock.

"The crash happened around 1.55pm on Thursday, 19 December, 2024 on Culzean Crescent involving a double decker bus.

"A report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal."

On Friday, East Ayrshire Council confirmed that school pupils were on board the bus.

A spokesperson for East Ayrshire Council said: “We can confirm that East Ayrshire Council were alerted to the incident and officers from Ayrshire Roads Alliance. Education Services and Health and Safety have been supporting emergency services at the scene.

“We were advised that some pupils from nearby schools were on board and one of our headteachers was first on scene, providing incredible assistance and support to pupils. Fortunately, they sustained only minor injuries and officers from Education Services have been liaising with affected families.

“Police Scotland, Stagecoach and Network Rail have since advised that they do not require any further assistance from the council at this time."

The road was initially shut down with a huge emergency response dispatched to the scene.

But the route was reopened more than three hours later, at 5.30pm.

A Scottish Ambulance Service spokesperson added on Thursday: “We received a call at 13:55 to attend an incident on Culzean Crescent, Kilmarnock. One ambulance and three special operations response teams (SORT) were dispatched to the scene and four patients were transported to University Hospital Crosshouse.”

A Stagecoach West Scotland spokesperson added on Thursday: "We can confirm there has been an incident involving one of our buses in Kilmarnock this afternoon (19/12/24). The 6 service, which runs from Kilmarnock Bus Station to New Farm Loch, struck a low bridge. We are aware of two people who were injured and are currently being treated by emergency services.
