A flight attendant has shared the reason holidaymakers should avoid wearing a certain item of clothing when jetting off to sunnier climes.
Many of us are turning our attention to holidays in warmer places as an escape from the long winter ahead. And when flying to your destination it probably makes sense to dress for the weather you're hoping for as you step off the plane.
But a former member of Emirates cabin crew has urged people to avoid wearing shorts while travelling. And while the aeroplane's savage air conditioning is one good reason to avoid them, he said it's for your own safety.
The flight attendant, called Drake, took to TikTok to issue his warning. He said: "Obviously you think that's a joke, but what I'm saying is do not wear shorts."
He recalled that during his training with Emirates, they practiced using the emergency slides from different aircrafts. And he said wearing shorts while attempting an emergency exit from the aircraft could lead to burns, reports Birmingham Live.
Drake said: "This was the best word of advice is that, especially in an emergency when you're trying to get out quick, this stuff [on the slide] is designed to get you down as fast as possible, and it burns.
"Like to the point where, if you're sliding down, you are supposed to keep your hands on top of your thighs because if you try to use your hands on the slide, your hands will get burned and your skin could get burned off."
He advised passengers to always choose long trousers for this reason and added: "Obviously, no one wants to get into an emergency, but this could save you a lot of pain."
His advice sparked a debate among users on the social media platform. One person asked: "Wait so why do some flight attendants uniforms require skirts then? I know they typically also require pantyhose but is that enough fabric to prevent the burns you're talking about?"
Another chimed in: "If it burns skin then don't wear workout leggings either! The material will melt and fuse to your skin."
And some gave other good reasons for covering up on flights. One flight attendant said: "As a flight attendant – please wear pants, those planes are not properly cleaned!"
And another added: "Always wear long sleeves too because I had a co-worker who got a skin disease from the airplane arm rests."
