Remove mould and banish washing machine odours with cleaning expert's 10-minute hack
Cleaning enthusiast Lynsey Crombie has shared her 'quick tip to banish stinky odours and mould build-up in your washing machine' and it requires one common kitchen ingredient
If the door of a washing machine isn't left open after use, mould can grow over time in the seal due to the damp and poorly ventilated environment.
Many people find it difficult to leave the door open for various reasons, like the risk of children or pets getting inside or simply because it's obstructive.
Nevertheless, cleaning enthusiast Lynsey Crombie, also known on social media as Lynsey, Queen of Clean, has uncovered a swift solution to eliminate mould and unpleasant odours from your washing machine within minutes, reports the Express.
The expert shared her "quick tip to banish stinky odours and mould build-up in your washing machine" on Instagram, which involves the use of a common household product – baking soda.
"Sprinkle into the rubber seal some bicarbonate of soda, spritz with water, [and] scrub with a small brush," she said. After applying the baking soda, let it sit for "10 minutes" before running a rinse cycle without any clothes in the drum.
In her demonstration video, Lynsey opts for a clean manual toothbrush to work the baking soda into the rubber seal of the washing machine. She added: "The bicarbonate [of soda] will soak up the odours and clean up the seal with ease."
Once the 10-minute wait is over and the rinse cycle complete, Lynsey exclaimed: "No more smelly washing machine!"
Bicarbonate of soda, a staple in baking, is readily available in the baking aisles of all major supermarkets, including Asda, Tesco and Aldi.
