The Gavin and Stacey finale wasn't the funniest - but it really was the perfect ending

OPINION: On Christmas Day, Gavin and Stacey fans tuned in to see whether Smithy said yes to Nessa's proposal following the 2019 cliffhanger.

James Corden gives his thoughts on further Gavin and Stacey episodes

It was a bittersweet moment for Gavin and Stacey fans on Christmas Day as the BBC series really did come to an end.

Nessa (played by Ruth Jones) and Smithy (James Corden), who have had an on-off relationship since the beginning of the series, finally tied the knot - and it's safe to say they definitely gave Ross and Rachel [from Friends] a run for their money.

In 2019, after the Christmas special ended on a cliffhanger, fans knew James and Ruth couldn't leave the show that way - and let's face it, we wanted to know whether Smithy said yes to Nessa's proposal (he didn't).

When I sat down to watch the finale, I was dubious—could it live up to my expectations, especially if this really was going to be the last episode?

It did.

The Gavin and Stacey cast

One thing I will say about the 90-minute episode is that I felt it wasn't as funny as the previous series or Christmas specials. I probably cried more than I laughed, but there was a good reason: this was a chance for the cast to say a proper goodbye to their characters.

From start to finish, there were laughs, gasps, and plenty of tears, and when Smithy's bride turned out to be Sonia (Laura Aikman), I couldn't believe it.

As James and Ruth promised, there were plenty of twists and turns despite us never finding out what really happened on that fishing trip.
