Do you live in a McDonald’s-free zone? Only 18 local authorities in the UK are without a set of the famous golden arches - and three of these are in Surrey.

McDonald’s is the world’s largest restaurant chain in the world, with more than 40,000 branches across the globe. Despite this though, there are currently just over a million people in the UK who live in a local authority which doesn’t have a McDonald’s restaurant within their boundary.

That’s around one in every 50 people in the country. A total of 18 local authorities in the UK are without a branch of the famed fast food outlet, according to exclusive Reach Data Unit analysis of data from the Food Standards Agency (FSA)

The largest of these is Waverley in Surrey. The two other areas in the county that are also golden-arch-less are Runnymede and Mole Valley.

However, while some areas in Surrey have no McDonald’s restaurants, others are spoilt for choice. Woking alone has three McDonald's, all within just under a 1.5-mile radius.

Spelthorne also has three, all within a two-mile radius of one another, while there are two in Staines town and one in Stanwell, near Ashford.

Meanwhile, Westminster is the McDonald’s capital of the UK. The London borough of Westminster is famously home to the UK government, as well as some of the country’s top tourist destinations such as Big Ben, Buckingham Palace, Trafalgar Square and Soho.

That may be why there are a total of 15 McDonald's restaurants located there, according to the FSA data. That works out as 7.3 for every 100,000 Westminster residents, the highest ratio per person of any local authority in the UK.

Cannock Chase - an area between Wolverhampton and Stafford - and Bolsover in Derbyshire have the joint next highest ratio in the country. Cannock Chase is home to five McDonald’s restaurants, while Bolsover has four, both of which work out as 5.0 for every 100,000 residents.

West Dunbartonshire also has four branches, which works out as 4.6 for every 100,000 people. Newport is next on the list with its seven McDonald’s branches, or the equivalent of 4.4 for every 100,000 people.

Harlow also has four branches which works out as 4.3 per 100,000, Boston has three or 4.2 per 100,000, and Crawley has five, which works out as 4.2 per 100,000.

Where else to get your fast food fix in Surrey's McDonald’s-free areas

Runnymede

The borough’s villages and towns don’t have a Maccies at all. It is made up of Egham, Englefield Green, Virginia Water, Addlestone, Ottershaw, Longcross, Thorpe and Lyne.

Runnymede is a mix of rural and urban setting, with the more built-up towns like Egham, Chertsey and Addlestone being the local go-to for high street food brands like Nando's, Pizza Express and Subway.

While McDonald’s-less, Runnymede isn’t burger deprived, however, and seems to make do with rivals like Wimpy, Burger King and KFC. There are only two Wimpy burger outlets in Surrey, the other being all the way over in Dorking.

Those desperate for a McDonald’s in Runnymede would either need to head to Staines. If you live in Egham, it’s not really a trek to get to the nearest Maccies. Or, it’s an easy trip to head to Woking or Walton.

Mole Valley

Largely rural with quaint towns and sprawling countryside, Mole Valley isn’t somewhere you’d likely expect to see a McDonald’s. And you won’t, because there are none, and likely won’t be.

Consisting of Leatherhead, Dorking, Ashted, Fetcham, Boxhill, Beare Green and Holmbury St Mary, major points of interest are nature reserves, given that Mole Valley is in the Surrey Hills. As previously mentioned, Dorking has it’s own Wimpy. Mole Valley doesn’t have Burger King, but there is a Subway and KFC, which also crops up in Leatherhead too. And the town has Taco Bell too.

Mole Valley’s nearest McDonald’s are in Cobham, Epsom and Crawley. Those living in Horley will need to travel around five miles to get to McDonald’s in Crawley, and those in Leatherhead need to travel roughly six miles to get to Cobham’s Maccies.

Waverley

Plenty of countryside can be found in Waverley, much like in Mole Valley, which is the neighbouring district. Both have no McDonald’s branches.

Waverley consists of Farnham, Cranleigh, Chiddingfold, Haslemere, Witley, Elstead, Godalming and Shamley Green. The closest to a burger or fast food take-out you can get to in Farnham is a Subway.

There’s a Domino’s pizza in Haslemere, but that won’t fix your burger hampering. Those in Farnham will have to head over to Aldershot, which is about four miles away.

For McDonald’s, the best bet would be Guildford, which of course has a variety of different fast food chains, specifically burgers. You can find Wendy’s, Burger King, Five Guys and Gourmet Burger Kitchen (GBK) - so very spoilt for choice.
