The Wisley Interchange has been closed throughout this weekend, to make way for important road improvements along the A3. The road has been shut in both directions from Friday, October 13, and isn’t expected to reopen until Monday, October 16 at around 6am.
The closure led to a whopping 20 mile diversion, as drivers were not able to take the A3 from Send to Wisley, or the M25 from Wisley to Ashtead. Alternatively, drivers were either sent up through Cobham, round Esher and Chessington, down to Ashtead.
Or they were sent down past Leatherhead, through Fetcham, past Effingham and past East Clandon. Events in the area were cancelled, including tickets to RHS Wisley Garden over the weekend.

Photos have now been released from National Highways, conducting the work of a huge metal beam being moved across the M25 via crane. The beam is the first of 10, and together they will support a bridge over the motorway, connecting the A3.
It is thought that the roadworks will make this stretch of road safer, as it is one of the busiest interchanges in the UK. National Highways commented on the ongoing works and said: “Our new bridge at Wisley Lane is making great progress and is just one of eight being built as part of our improvements.
“When complete, the Wisley Lane bridge will provide a new, safer route for walkers, cyclists, horse-riders, and drivers between Wisley Lane and the A3 via Ockham Park roundabout. Together, along with free-flowing left turns, extra lanes, and a series of upgrades around the A245 Painshill, our scheme will create safer, smoother journeys for everyone travelling through the Southeast’s busiest interchange.
“Down at Wisley, the beams for our bridge are almost ready to be lifted into position. We were due to install these in September, however, this will now take place later this month.”
National Highways shared the image via Twitter, writing: “And so it begins…..the first of ten giant beams to form the new #Wisley Lane Bridge over the #A3 in #Surrey were lowered into place last night, with eight to go. Remember – the #A3 remains closed in both directions all weekend.” One fan of the construction images replied: “Would love to see more photos.”
