The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) will hold the Tokyo Climate Conference: Better Climate Information for a Safe and Sustainable Society in Tokyo, Japan, 6-8 July 2009.
This conference will bring together representatives both from users and providers of climate information and services as well as prominent scientists and experts on climate-related matters.
The Conference aims at identifying actions and methods to develop an effective framework involving users and proiders to create user-oriented products ant promote their utilization, with a focus on the Asia-Pacific region.
The results of the Conference are expected to contribute, as inputs of from the region, to World Climate Conference-3 to be held in Geneva, Switzerland, from 31 August to 4 September 2009.
In order to raise social awareness of climate information usage, an open symposium is scheduled for the final day.
Main objectives of the conference
- Review the current status of provision, accessibility and utilization of products related to climate prediction and information
- Assess the current responsibilities, roles and capabilities of National Meteorological and Hydrological Services (NMHSs) in the production and communication of climate information
- Share the concerns and needs of users in various sectors on climate information and services for climamte risk management and adaptation
- Identify actions and methods to develop an effective framework involving users and providers to create user-oriented products and promote their utilization
Results
The results of the session will be formulated as a conference statement on action and measures to promote the application of climate information, which is expected to contribute to World Climate Conference-3 (WCC-3) to be held in Geneva, Switzerland, from 31 August to 4 September 2009 (http://www.wmo.int/wcc3/).

The WMO-GLOBE youth message initiative intends to provide scientists, policy-makers and media representatives attending WCC-3 with captivating and inspirational examples of the many ways that youth from around the world are using their research on weather and climate to respond to climate issues in their regions.
