To foster the cooperative relationship between JMA and the National Ocean and Atmosphere Administration (NOAA)/National Environmental Satellite, Data, and Information Service (NESDIS), Ms. Mary E. Kicza, the NOAA Assistant Administrator for Satellite and Information Service, and her colleagues visited JMA on 8 September 2010 to exchange technical information about meteorological satellites operation and to see JMA's operational work.
The Assistant Administrator gave a courtesy call for Mr. Kunio Sakurai, the Director-General of JMA.
The Assistant Administrator showed her interest in JMA's future plan of meteorological satellite operation, and extended her hope to deepen cooperative relationship between JMA and NOAA/NESDIS.
As is well known, Japan and the United States have many common interests in the field of meteorology and climatology.
Regarding meteorological satellites, JMA and NOAA/NESDIS have agreed to a contingency plan to back-up the geostationary meteorological satellites of each other.
When JMA successfully put two follow-on satellites (HIMAWARI-8 and 9) into the orbit, JMA and NOAA/NESDIS will be ready for the contingency plan.
