Life's been crazy busy these past few years as I've poured my heart and soul into building CannyLabs. Now, you might be thinking, "CannyLabs? Never heard of it." And that's okay. That's exactly how we wanted it. We started as a small group of visionaries with a passion for pushing the boundaries of technology, and that's how we'll always remain. Our focus has always been on impact, not the spotlight. We're the quiet force behind some of the most groundbreaking tech you've likely encountered. But I've always believed that innovation shouldn't be confined to an exclusive group. I'm passionate about democratizing access to cutting-edge technologies and empowering others to create their own groundbreaking solutions. Now, here's where things get personal. While I'm the founder of CannyLabs, I'm stepping out on my own to make this happen. I'll be leveraging everything I've learned and built at CannyLabs, utilizing its incredible resources, to create a series of groundbreaking ventures that are accessible to a much wider audience. Think of it as CannyLabs for the world. 😉 These ventures will empower innovators, entrepreneurs, and dreamers like you to turn your boldest ideas into reality. We'll provide the resources, mentorship, and support needed to break down barriers and unleash your full potential. The truth is, I haven't been on LinkedIn because the level of network I sought was hard to find here. I scoured the world, building connections with the audacious few who dared to dream as big as I did. But now, I'm ready to open those doors wider and invite you into this world. Reflecting on the Pathways to Tech Event Week II - A Headstarter Experience This has been an incredible week. On August 1st, I was honored to attend the Pathways2Tech event, where we heard from some truly remarkable speakers: Dennis Crowley, Tariq Ahmed, Julian Alvarez, and Hamza Ali. Each of them offered unique insights that sparked new ideas and motivation. 🔑 Dennis Crowley - Founder of Foursquare ($150M Revenue) Dennis shared a powerful insight: "Companies are bought, not sold." He emphasized that acquisition opportunities typically arise when a company is thriving, not when it’s on the market. As founders, we should focus on building sustainable businesses rather than merely aiming for a sale. He pointed out that many startups fail because people often give up—whether on the venture or themselves. He also highlighted the importance of focus and creativity in engineering, stating that the best engineers can navigate ambiguity and innovate without needing exhaustive specifications. 🔑 Tariq Ahmed - First Engineer AppLovin ($30Bn IPO) Tariq brought an intriguing perspective on the future of software engineering. He noted that it’s not just about coding; it’s about collaboration and understanding customer needs. Quoting “Chaos is a ladder,” he reminded us that adaptability in uncertain situations is invaluable. He also addressed imposter syndrome, suggesting that it can drive us toward continuous improvement. With AI tools advancing, the ability to leverage them effectively will set successful engineers apart. 🔑 Julian Alvarez 🚀 - Ex-Meta and CEO of Wisdolia ($20K+ MRR) Julian encouraged us to detach from our ideas and invest our optimism in our teams. He wisely stated, "The only real failure is the failure to learn." Embracing our mistakes as learning opportunities is essential for growth. ✍ Slush Wrap: Day 0 and Day 1 This year, I had the privilege of attending Slush as part of the Digital Hub Initiative's delegation, representing MotionLab.Berlin, the DeepTech Hub of the network. Day 0️⃣ : Exploring Aalto Startup Center Our delegation visited the Aalto Startup Center to learn more about their startup ecosystem and participated in a session about VTT, Finnland's leading R&D partner in sustainable growth. 🌱 Like MotionLab.Berlin, Aalto Startup Center is deeply committed to building an ecosystem and a community where startups can not only grow but collaborate and share knowledge. The idea of giving back to the community is fundamental, creating a continuous cycle of learning and support that strengthens the entire ecosystem. Day 1️⃣: Thought Leaders and Hardtech Insights The day began with a great session, Maintaining Product-Market Fit Through Decades, featuring Emil Eifrem and Patrick Pichette (Google’s former CFO). They discussed the relentless pace of change in tech and the reality that founders must always prepare for the unexpected. As they put it: “You’re going to get a curveball for sure, and you don’t know when it’s coming, so you have to be ready to innovate.” ⚾ Later, I attended a discussion on Scaling Hardtech Startups with Haïkel Balti founder of Faircraft. His insights into the unique challenges of hardtech innovation—such as managing resource-heavy timelines and designing first-of-a-kind products—felt particularly relevant to the work we’re doing at MotionLab.Berlin. 💡 At the German Pitching Stage, I connected with some incredible startups and hub representatives. 🤝 The day also included a talk on the State of European DeepTech 2024 report by Dealroom.co, which offered valuable insights into where the industry is heading. 📊 The evening wrapped up with a fantastic networking event hosted by Superconnectors, followed by a dinner organized by 48forward—a perfect setting for meaningful conversations and networking. 🌟 Reflections: 💡 Slush offers a unique opportunity to dive into emerging technologies and explore future trends. 💡Networking at such a large event can be daunting—especially when it’s your first time—but what stood out to me was how open and supportive everyone was. Conversations felt genuine, and the willingness to share insights made it easier to connect and learn. 💡These first two days have been a powerful reminder of the brilliance, creativity, and innovation that drive human progress. We truly have the potential to shape a better world when we harness these qualities. 💡Progress happens when we collaborate and support one another. Tekkon has had a solid year in 2024 ... We got involved in events across 3 countries, bought a hell of a lot of coffees, have given back through mentoring opportunities, workshops, networking events, introductions, referrals, articles and tech advice and to top that all off, we are expanding our reach in 2025. Plus, our Tekkies have worked extremely hard, with a range of startups to help take their product, platform or vision to the next level. Before 2024 gets away from us, we wanted to reflect on the big year that has been ... In Australia, we sponsored events like Morning Startup (25 meetups, with more than 700 coffees in total) and Freo Startup Fest (as part of the West Tech Fest week), both of which, we think, were major successes this year. We also launched our own series of small, yet growing meetups through Startup Today, which we'll be expanding via more cities in 2025! Finally, we got involved in Tekknite, the premier annual Tekkon event run by Tekkon Nepal, with some of our clients joining in on the fun - SpacetoCo and Australian Tenders! On our other list of accomplishments for 2024: We brought our biggest entourage to Nepal this year too, with 9 travelers in total! Mentored for 3 programs - Plus Eight Pre-Accelerator, CORE Innovation Hub's Core Start and Student Startup Weekend @ Spacecubed Ran 2 x Coffee events and 2 x CTO Events in preparation for our Tech Leadership Programs launch Attended Sushi Tech in Tokyo, Japan, with 2 other WA Startups and had our very own booth. Ran our own IT in Japan event, with a panel of awesome speakers from across Japan's tech scene. Spoke to more than 100 Startup Founders at varying stages in their journey about startup challenges, funding, tech and developers - across Australia, SE Asia and Japan Introduced a whole bunch of people to each other across our combined networks Signed some awesome new clients! Wrote several articles, including 2 (with 1 more on the way) for Startup News!!! Got accepted into a VC's Expert Network as a preferred supplier. Established awesome relationships with some great referral partners, CTOs and other professionals ... And finally, we can't wait for what's to come in 2025! How was your 2024?
