Derbyshire TV auctioneer Charles Hanson faced court in Derby regarding his trial for allegedly assaulting his estranged wife.
The 46-year-old was present via video link at Derby Crown Court during the brief session on Wednesday, December 4. The court heard that Hanson's defence team has requested additional information from the Crown Prosecution Service before his trial, scheduled for February 10, 2025, expected to last between seven and ten days.
Judge Shaun Smith KC deemed "all of the requests the defence has made are reasonable" and has directed the prosecution to respond by 4pm on Wednesday, December 11, before a subsequent mention hearing on Thursday, December 12. Addressing Hanson, Judge Smith said: "Mr Hanson you do not need to come to next week's hearing. I will make sure the defence have all the information they require but if you wish to attend you may."
Hanson is accused of controlling and coercive behaviour and assault against his wife, Rebecca, to which he has pleaded not guilty during a hearing on February 7, this year. The 'Bargain Hunt' and 'Flog It!' celebrity was apprehended following a police call-out to a domestic situation in Quarndon in June, 2023, reports Derbyshire Live.
A statement from Derbyshire police confirmed: "The force was called to reports of a domestic incident at an address in Church Road, Quarndon, in June. A man in his 40s was arrested on suspicion of assault and was released on police bail while enquiries continued."
According to the statement, Hanson faced charges on December 14, last year, which include one count of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, two counts of assault by beating and engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour. Hanson previously denied the allegations in comments to Derbyshire Live, asserting: "I will be cooperating fully with the investigation and legal process."
Having become a qualified surveyor in 1999, Hanson swiftly moved into Christie's ceramics and glass department. He garnered public attention with his first stint on BBC's Bargain Hunt in 2002, at which time he was the programme's youngest expert at just 25 years old. He then ventured into his own auctioneering enterprise near Etwall, Derbyshire in 2005 and later initiated Hansons London in 2018.
Hanson has been given bail that stipulates he must reside and sleep nightly at his parent's address on Ashbourne Road, Mackworth, while also avoiding any direct or indirect contact with his wife.
