David Cassidy has revealed he is suffering from dementia.

The actor, 66, opened up about fighting the memory loss disease after he worried fans over the weekend when he fell over and forgot the lyrics during a performance.

“I was in denial, but a part of me always knew this was coming," he said on Monday.

David revealed his grandfather and his mother both battled the disease, and speaking to People magazine about his mum's struggles, he continued: “In the end, the only way I knew she recognized me is with one single tear that would drop from her eye every time I walked into the room… I feared I would end up that way.”

The Partridge Family star told the website that he plans to stop touring to concentrate on his health.

“I want to focus on what I am, who I am and how I’ve been without any distractions. I want to love. I want to enjoy life.”

Over the weekend, the former teen heartthrob was performing at the Canyon Club in Agoura and appeared to forget the lyrics at times.

He also took a tumble during one song as he was playing an instrumental break with his keyboard player, staggering off the edge of the stage.

And later on he stopped playing guitar and handed it to a technician as he complained: "Apologies I can't play the guitar this badly out of tune."

As he went to take the microphone off the stand, he pulled it back and hit himself in the face with it.

"Obviously you're not listening, so it doesn't matter. I'll just shut up now," he also said after one fan shouted out while he was talking.

David seemed in a better place recently after a difficult period which included divorcing his third wife Sue Shifrin, a series of arrests including for DUI in 2010 and 2013, and a stint in rehab.

He appeared on ITV's This Morning in 2015 for an interview with Eamonn Holmes and Ruth Langsford to discuss his decision to file for bankruptcy.
