Liam Gallagher has spoken out after winning a deeply personal award.
The megastar is known for his quick wit and humour but also his deep affection for those close to him, as well as causes he has a true passion for. Last year, the Britpop icon opened up about adopting his dog, Buttons, from an animal sanctuary in Thailand, instantly melting the hearts of his fans.
Button's owners has abandoned her in the jungle when she was just five months old due to "not being cute enough". Liam, 52, fell in love with Buttons after filling in a Google form to re-home her from the Happy Doggo sanctuary. Prior to Buttons' arrival in the UK, Liam and his partner Debbie Gwyther underwent tests over video call to see if they and their home were suitable for the adoption.
Following the adoption, as well as raising £25,000 for the Thailand sanctuary, the Oasis star has been recognised with a huge award from animal charity, PETA. The organisation announced that he was the recipient of the Strike the Right Chord for Animals Award. On the framed certificate, which has been sent to Liam, it said: "PETA recognises and thanks Liam Gallagher for opening his home and heart to sweet homeless mutt Buttons, inspiring his legion of fans to consider adopting animals.
"When countless dogs are in shelters waiting for a loving home, such an action saves lives." Sharing his reaction to receiving the special award, Liam said: "Thanks for the award. Rescuing Buttons has been the best decision we've ever made. She brings so much happiness to our lives and everyone she meets. We’re so lucky to have her; we're obsessed. I thoroughly recommend adopting a homeless dog."
Meanwhile, PETA Vice President of Programmes, Elisa Allen commented: "Let there be love for this lovely pup and Liam, whose compassionate act for animals sets a wonderful example for his legions of fans. PETA is delighted to recognise him for opening his heart and home to a dog who desperately needed a loving family, and PETA urges everyone to follow suit and adopt, never shop."
Fans have also taken to X, formerly known as Twitter to praise Liam. "Thanks to Liam and Debbie for giving her a better life, they really are beautiful souls," said one. A second added: "That's brilliant well done Liam a well deserved award." Meanwhile, another typed: "Liam well done on the PETA ting. You're the BEST u are you're lovely."
Last year, dog rescuer Niall Harbison revealed his shock after discovering Liam was hoping to adopt from the Happy Doggo sanctuary. Speaking on Sky News, he said: "The name on the form was Liam Gallagher, but I thought that’s obviously not him, then the next line was occupation, and it was 'singer'. I thought my mates were taking the p**s. But I checked it out a bit more and his details all stacked up.
"I did interviews with him and his lovely [partner], they have cats and they just really wanted a dog, they've been following me on social media and wanted Buttons."
