Michael McIntyre's grandma tried to split him and his now-wife Kitty up, making "vicious" comments to the comedian and his partner.
The 48-year-old revealed that he and aromatherapist wife Kitty had a rocky journey, although they are now happily married with two children. When the pair first met, McIntyre recalls how Kitty wasn't as interested in him as he was in her.
Michael and Kitty's rocky start
When he finally won her over and the pair got together, they had another issue when it turned out his grandma didn't approve of their budding romance. Michael shared what happened on BBC Radio 4's Desert Island Discs, saying: "Unfortunately my grandma didn't really like it when I got a girlfriend.
"She was trying to break us up, which was funny for a while but then it became quite vicious, an untenable situation." But despite his grandmother's attempts, the pair's relationship evolved and they married in 2003 in a ceremony in Somerset.
Michael, whose stand up special will air on BBC1 on Saturday at 8.35pm, previously told Jonathon Ross: "We might have kissed on our first date. That was it for me. I announced to everybody that I'm in love and I'm going to marry this girl."
In his 2010 book, Life and Laughing, Michael confessed that although he was smitten, it wasn't love at first sight for Kitty. He wrote: "She was the girl I had been looking for. In the romantic comedy that was my life, this would have made a good ending.
"We would fall happily ever after. Within moments of seeing her and chatting to her, I was totally up for that ending. Unfortunately, she wasn't."
Lavish lifestyle
But luckily for Michael, the comedian grew on Kitty, with the couple still going strong after more than 20 years of marriage. They now share a lavish life, living in a £10 million eight-bedroom home in London, complete with its own swimming pool, gym and cinema room.
As well as their London pad, they have a home in Wiltshire, which they used to live in full time, until he was mugged outside his son's school in 2018. They decided to invest in their new Hampstead home, which is reportedly more secluded.
Although it set the family back millions, Michael can afford it given his net worth soared when he took his stand-up show to streaming service Netflix. According to Celebrity Net Worth, the comedian is worth a staggering £80 million, with his multi-million pound Netflix deal said to be an offer he couldn't refuse.
Private family
They share two sons, Lucas and Oscar, who are in their teens. Despite being the sons of one of the most famous comedians in the world, Kitty and Michael have chosen to keep their lives relatively private, aside from his comedy routines in which he jokes about the highs and lows of parenting.
Meanwhile, Kitty is no stranger herself to fame. While she keeps her and her family low-key, she is the daughter of Simon Ward, who famously portrayed Winston Churchill in the 1972 film Young Churchill. Her sister Sophie followed in their dad's footsteps having starred in Young Sherlock Holmes, Oscar nominated Return to Oz and Jane Eyre alongside Michael Fassbender.
