OpenAI has confirmed that its AI-powered search engine, ChatGPT, is now available to free users of the chatbot.

The AI giant announced this as part of a Christmas countdown, stating that the search tool would be accessible on all platforms where ChatGPT is available, provided users have an account and are logged in. Initially launched for paying subscribers in October, the web search feature within ChatGPT offers a more conversational way to find answers than traditional search engines, allowing users to ask follow-up questions for additional information.

This move is seen as a direct challenge to Google, especially as Google has begun adding generative AI-powered results at the top of search pages. OpenAI also revealed improvements to its search tool on mobile devices, making it faster and more akin to a conventional search engine.

Furthermore, the search tool will be added to its Advanced Voice feature, enabling voice-activated searches. OpenAI continues to expand its range of features and subscription options in a bid to increase user numbers and revenue.

The firm is grappling with high costs, a common issue for AI companies, especially when it comes to funding the computing power required to enhance AI models. Earlier this month, OpenAI unveiled a premium subscription tier named ChatGPT Pro, which is being introduced at a cost of $200 per month for those seeking access to the company's top-tier models and AI tools.
