Lady Louise Windsor has made a surprise appearance with her mother the Duchess of Edinburgh at The London International Horse Show.

With Royal Family set to gather at Sandringham to celebrate Christmas, as befits tradition, the festive outing saw the eldest child of the Duke and Duchess accompany her mum to the equestrian event.

Lady Louise sported a pink shirt, tucked into a black and white maxi skirt, with her signature glasses and her hair up, while Duchess Sophie was wearing a tan skirt, cream top and patterned scarf around the shoulders.

The mother and daughter duo were pictured meeting a professional showjumper called Lorenzo, known as 'The Flying Frenchman'. The rider shared a picture of their encounter on his Instagram stories, calling it a 'magnificent meeting with the Duchess of Edinburgh'.

Louise, who is 16th in line to the throne, is studying English at the University of St Andrews. She is reportedly dating fellow student Felix da Silva Clamp, who didn't join her at the horse show.

The son of a solicitor father, Felix is said to work part time at an ice-cream parlour while studying in Scotland, with student Louise once taking a job at a garden centre. The royal turned 21 on November 8 this year and has been praised for her relatability.

"What's not to like about Lady Louise?" asked former BBC royal correspondent Jennie Bond. "She has overcome a great deal and now is blossoming into a beautiful 21 year old, enjoying life at St Andrews like any other undergraduate. She's studying English and has reportedly taken to the stage in University productions, in many ways emulating her father.

"Louise seems to have both feet firmly planted on the ground. She decided to refuse the HRH style she could've used after her 18th birthday and she also took a temporary job at a local garden centre, earning around £7 an hour. She seems to have nailed the art of being royal and extremely relatable at the same time."

Lady Louise had a tough start in life, weighing just 4lbs 9oz at birth after her mother was rushed to hospital for an emergency caesarean. The newborn was born at Frimley Park Hospital in Surrey and spent two weeks in intensive care.

The Royal Family recently enjoyed a pre-Christmas lunch at Buckingham Palace, attended by Duchess Sophie and her husband Prince Edward. Lady Louise was not present on the day and it remains to be seen if she will join the Royal Family in Sandringham to celebrate Christmas in Norfolk, undertaking the famous walk to church for the Christmas service before returning to the house for Christmas Dinner and games.
