New snow maps have revealed exactly where in Britain is set to be covered by the white stuff today.

In the run up to Christmas, the Met Office has detailed what weather people around England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland can expect during the busy festive period. Today's charts show large parts of the United Kingdom will see hail, snow and sleet and heavy rainfall.

Snow fell across the north, northwest and Midlands in the early hours this morning - at around 3am and 4am - with some small areas in Norwich and Cambridge also getting some. As the morning went on, larger swathes of snow hit in Manchester, Birmingham and Newcastle after making its way down from Scotland.

Soon after, the rain accompanies any snow which hit Britain, with heavy showers experienced on the southwest coast around Plymouth and Cornwall. The likes of Northern Ireland and Scotland had the worst of the heavy snow, but this eventually eased as the morning went on.

The Met Office issued a yellow weather warning, which is till currently in place, for wind in the UK, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. It covers the West Midlands, northwest, northeast, south east and the likes of Yorkshire, Derbyshire and Hampshire.

A spokesman for the weather forecaster explained: "It's a cold, blustery start to Sunday, and as the sequence shows we're even seeing a little snow in places this morning, chiefly over hills towards the north and west. Widely windy with gales, severe in the north and west.

"Frequent showers arriving from the northwest, heavy with hail and providing snow over hills before gradually fading later. Sunny spells in between, but feeling very cold in the strong winds."

Speaking about its forecast for tonight, the Met Office said: "Showers becoming confined to far eastern coasts and winds slowly moderating. Clear spells overnight for most, but cloud building in the west towards dawn. Touch of frost in sheltered spots."

A prediction of what people can expect in the run up to, and on, Christmas Day was also released. The forecaster said the cold Arctic air, which is currently making its way across Britain from the Atlantic, will make way tomorrow to the mild Atlantic air coming from the southwest.

As a result, Brits can expect to have a calm but cloudy Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. The Met Office added: "It will be feeling cold for all of us during the rest of the weekend. However as we head towards Christmas, milder Atlantic air will move in, with many of us seeing a grey Christmas rather than a white one."

It comes after yesterday saw 70mph winds that sparkedtravel chaosbefore Christmas. Heathrow Airport was forced to cancel flights, while P&O Ferries announced that journeys between Larne and Cairnryan had been cancelled until at least 8pm on Sunday.
