A teenager had his leg torn off in a horrific hit and run which left him fighting for life last night.

The victim, 17, was left lying near a Pelican crossing, with his severed limb and a shoe in the road nearby. Police are appealing for witnesses to the collision which happened at 20.25pm on Monday night.

A group of men were seen rushing to help the youngster near a Tesco store on Halifax Road, Bradford. West Yorkshire Police confirmed that officers in a patrol car had spotted the vehicle involved. It was believed to be travelling 'above the speed limit'.

As their marked car turned onto the opposite carriageway, the suspect had disappeared out of sight. Officers then located the victim of the hit and run. He had suffered 'life changing' injuries.

"He was taken to hospital where he remains in a critical condition," a force spokesperson said. "The road is currently closed whilst police investigations are carried out. Enquiries are ongoing to locate the driver of the vehicle. Anyone who witnessed the incident or may have dash cam footage is asked to contact police via 101 or use the LiveChat facility."

A voluntary referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct has been made, they added.
