NORWICH owner Delia Smith must feel like opening a Chinese restaurant and calling it: Win One Soon.

The culinary queen has now seen her Canaries draw eight and lose the other five of their 13 matches since returning to the top flight as the recipe for victory still eludes them, and this defeat saw then sink to the bottom of the Premiership.

This time it was flying Finn striker Jonatan Johansson, who clipped the visitors' wings with two early goals in the space of six minutes.

Substitutes Paul Konchesky and Jason Euell made sure it was Canary pie on the menu when they added goals in the final quarter.

Norwich manager Nigel Worthington will be asking some serious questions about the ease with which his team's defence was exposed early. The first goal came when Charlton earned a free kick on the halfway line which was floated into the box by Talal El Karkouri.

Hermann Hreidarsson won the first header comfortably and Johansson was unchallenged on the six-yard line as he had the simple task of nodding the ball into the top left corner.

The Canaries soon flew the defensive nest again as Jerome Thomas was given too much space down the left and he measured a cross for Danny Murphy.

The former Liverpool midfielder wisely aimed his header inside the far post only for agile goalkeeper Robert Green to claw the ball off the line, but Johansson pounced to ram home the rebound.

Green's initial save eased fears that the England squad member had earlier suffered a serious injury, as he needed treatment on his left leg after six minutes following an acrobatic leap to palm away a teasing cross from the left.

But the injury caught up with him and he did not see out the full 90 minutes.

The visitors might have pulled a goal back after 24 minutes when McKenzie turned smartly in the left channel inside the box and hit a fierce shot narrowly wide of the near post.

Charlton are regarded by many clubs as the blueprint on how to survive in the Premiership.

During last season, Norwich regularly sent two boardroom scouts to The Valley to try to learn how it is done.

Whatever lessons were learned - and Norwich have been acclaimed for getting it right off the field - they failed to compete with a Charlton team who have not made the best of starts to the season themselves.

Worthington made a much needed change at the break, unleashing David Bentley in place of Mattias Jonson.

Bentley, on loan from Arsenal, had been suspended by the coach following a training ground prank when he made fun of a coaching drill.

But having served his time the youngster made an impression, going close after 56 minutes with a curling a 20-yard free kick as Norwich staged their usual burst at the start of the second half.

McKenzie then strayed offside four minutes later as he tucked home Darren Huckerby's left-wing cross.

Green went off after the hour and must have been a cursing his injury having seen Tottenham's Paul Robinson letting in five goals in yesterday's north London derby ahead of England's midweek friendly in Spain.

Norwich were always vulnerable to Charlton's swift breaks and were killed off in such fashion after 75 minutes.

Right back Luke Young charged down the flank and hit a deep low cross which was tucked into an empty net at the far post by Paul Konchesky with his first touch after coming off the bench. The frustration of the visitors was compounded after 80 minutes when McKenzie again put the ball in the net but saw the effort ruled out because Huckerby had strayed offside.

It was a harsh decision from referee Andre Marriner who otherwise got everything right in his first Premiership match.

The icing on the cake for Charlton came three minutes before the end when Johansson crossed from the left and the ball was turned in by Euell.

It was no consolation for Norwich's travelling fans that they contributed to the highest attendance since Charlton returned to The Valley, a crowd of 27,057.
